football_scooter 0 Posted March 1, 2007 4 year extension-- Good for him! Bears had to get that done. They were getting skewered in the national media. Smith just took a team QB'd by Rex Grossman to the Superbowl. Pay the man for fock's sake. [geek board] And while I am not a racist, I will speculate something that could be construed as such, even if not intended. That thing is all the hooplah over 2 black coaches? Yeah - whitey loved that when they were marketing the hell out of it, but now it's the other side of the coin. If the Bears made Lovie hold out while all these white coaches have money thrown all over them, it'd be Al Sharpton on TV shouting about the rampant racism of the Bears organization to want to make Lovie a slave. [/geek board] Not that I think the Bears are racists at all - but perception is everything. That would be a PR nightmare they could not take. Much cheaper to just pay him. And it's the right thing to do anyway.
swamp dog 0 Posted March 1, 2007 good for lovie--and better yet for the bears public relations. it was getting uncomfortable there for awhile looks like he'll get $5.5 mill a year average (4 yrs/$22 mill): http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6517196 that's still a half-mill less than mooch is getting this year to man a mic at nfl network, but it's good to see the bears loosening the purse strings
Walter34 3 Posted March 1, 2007 Less than a month after the Superbowl. Excellent work! Good thing no one jumped the gun with uninformed assumptions trying to see issues when they just werent there. Head coach Lovie Smith will not be a lame duck heading into next season after signing an extension on Wednesday that will keep him in Chicago through 2011. General manager Jerry Angelo was also extended and is now under contract through 2013.

harken34 0 Posted March 1, 2007 Lovie or who ever. The Bear will never win the Super Bowl until they get rid of GROSSMAN!

Good thing no one jumped the gun with uninformed assumptions trying to see issues when they just werent there. sorry, walter, the bears storied history of being tight with coaches worked against them here. there was hardly a well-respected media person anywhere who wasn't scratching their heads over why it took so long. you and drj were the only two people probably on planet earth who found not a single thing wrong with any of it. should have been done a while ago. it got done. DrJ 0 Posted March 1, 2007 sorry, walter, the bears storied history of being tight with coaches worked against them here. there was hardly a well-respected media person anywhere who wasn't scratching their heads over why it took so long. you and drj were the only two people probably on planet earth who found not a single thing wrong with any of it. should have been done a while ago. it got done. Yeah, what a bummer, he has a 4 year extension less than 1 month after the Superbowl. At 5.5 million a season, those cheap and terrible Bears. Pretty crazy how they were able to bridge that HUGE gap in less than a week. Strangely reminiscent of the Scott Skiles situation, like I had said. But wait, we're supposed to get our panties all in a bunch you say over obvious negotiation tactics? The only ones foolish here are the ones that couldn't see through it. The media was just looking to print a story like they always do, and the people that gobble up all of their stuff looking for convenient ways to knock everything Bears look foolish. Pretty funny if you ask me. Oh, and if you still believe that "they offered him 3 million a year" BS...
DrJ 0 Posted March 1, 2007 Now Da Bears need to get Angelo his extension. I don't know how long Ted Phillips' contract runs for, but extend him too. Ever since he took over as President, things are working in this organization. The new stadium looks a little goofy from the outside, but he did get a new one. Mike McCaskey is the devil, and doesn't know how to run crap. Keep Phillips around a while.

Oh, and if you still believe that "they offered him 3 million a year" BS... i didn't see too many people saying he wouldn't get his extension. we all pretty much agreed that would get done (you were the only one speculating on the compensation, though, if he did bolt--2 firsts). there has been--and always will be--a difference of opinion about the timing and perception. in one corner: nearly the entire country and many media stalwarts who think the bears dragged their feet on this one; in the other corner, a smattering of bear fans like you and walter. we'll agree to disagree. you've got your space and your right to your view; the rest of the free world has their right to theirs

But feel free to keep buying into the "talks have broken down" headlines, just because the media ran it and your so called majority bought into it hook, line, and sinker. It just makes you a majority of fools. A more realistic headline would have been "a deal is imminent". But hey, you're right - you are entitled to your viewpoint. Even if it was proven to be 100% incorrect a mere week later.

Well, the actual truth of the matter is that it is a 5.5 million a year extension that is tacked onto his current deal. He is slated to make 1.45 million this season, and will make 4.7 million per season over the course of the next 5 years. So the Bears get the best of both worlds, they get to claim they are paying Lovie Smith 5.5 million per season, and got a deal that they found to be fair and saved a few bucks in the process. See, that's what happens when you negotiate. You get the middle ground - a deal that is favorable for both parties. And again - you are entitled to your view. Sorry that it was proven to be 100% false though. Failing to admit that you were wrong in the face of indisputible evidence doesn't exactly help your cause, it is a tip.
