Highway Robbery

S.F. Bay Area Geeks

Recommended Posts

I am considering a position in the Bay Area (Menlo Park)...I am currently in Miami. I have no clue if I would like the area, and I am concerned about the cost of living.

What is it like socially? Cool stuff to do? Any information about the area is appreciated. If there are cool S.F. links as well please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

If you are not in the six figure range, don't go. Do some searching on-line for the type of housing you want in Menlo Park.

You are giving up the beach and gaining about 100,000 proctologist.

Seriously: Great restaurants, coffee and architecture. I would rather be in Miami.

Thanks for the advice regarding salary.

I know it may not be as cool as Miami but Job satisfaction is important too.

Understood. :dunno: SF is one of the most cultured places I ever stayed. There are long stretches of cloudy weather. I was in town once when it looked like the whole city was just standing around outside just for a chance to get a little sun.

UMMM, well, native Bay Area, yea six figures maybe high six figures, especially in Menlo Park. Ah nice BBC bar in Menlo Park. Traffic sucks, weather is OK. I just don't think California Bay area is all that golden anymore. I remember the days before Silicon Valley when everything was orchards and open spaces.

expensive, but not too insane. Highest gas in the nation - brutal at $3.70 a gal.

Great weather, lots of pretty girls (despite the constant h0mo references) but also a lot of materialism and snobbery because there's a sh!tload of money here.

But that said, it's a nice place to live - good weather, lots of beaches, nooks and crannies. Great hiking, and you're 3 hours from Reno/Tahoe and an hour from Santa Cruz, couple hours from Monterey, or go north to the redwoods and great backpacking.

I love the bay area. If only you could take all the obnoxious a-holes out, you'd have the perfect place to live. I guess you can say that about any large populace though.

Best of luck.

Got to have a good salary or you will struggle here. Menlo Park is nice. You could do a lot worse. Weather is mild. Not too hot, not too cold.

I prefer San Deigo. Better weather, same need for salary. Better mexican food. SF is cool if you go to the right places. Downtown smells like homeless pee.

Menlo Park is boring, the further down the 101 you go from SF the more boring it gets. Downtown Palo Alto is kinda cool and definately a pricey place to live all around. Hey, at least your close to Great America (Theme Park)

I've been out there a couple of times to visit friends who live there. They moved out there a few years back and they love it.

As noted by others, it's a very expensive area. While Miami is a very metro city, it's still in FL, where the standard of living is much less expensive than the Bay area.

One thing to look out for if/when you move out there and look for a place is that many areas have serious mold problems due to the amount of moisture...hence all the fog.

As for SF itself. Nice city, but the worst homeless situation that I have EVAH seen (and I work in NYC.) Many homeless people/beggars and they're focking AGGRESSIVE! They will come right up to you w/the attitude like you OWE them something. They don't even pretend what it's for either. Walking around in the Haight there are many hippie homeless w/signs flat-out telling you they need money for pot.

Great bars, restaurants, shopping, hotties...

Also very liberal town. I walked into a local book store and all the books on display were very much left-wing. There were times when I felt like Custer. This may be a good thing or a bad thing for you.
