edjr 6,592 Posted August 1, 2007 anyone been watching? the guy that does the impressions was pretty funny.
phillybear 366 Posted August 1, 2007 I can't bring myself to watch the show anymore. I usually try to watch the first episode or two, but I quickly lose interest when unfunny asscancers move on to th next round, and they send semi-talented people home. These comedians suck, especially over the last couple of seasons. And all the winners suck too. Dat Phan? The cripple? I don't care who wins this year, but I bet it's the guy wearing a gorilla's mask, for fock's sake. Rich Vos, Ralphie May in Season 1. Jim Norton in Season 2, before contractually obligations made him drop out. This was the class of the show. There were a handful of other decent ones. The rest suck. I can do better standup. Strike 5,546 Posted August 1, 2007 Nah. once I found out it was rigged that kind of blew it for me. There are plenty of other funny things on that I can watch instead.
RicemanX 20 Posted August 1, 2007 nobody I liked made the top 10. And I really did like the gorilla suit guy, he was hilarious. Mel Silverback haha, Jewish gorilla, hilarious. http://www.melsilverback.com/melsclips.html
jets24 6 Posted August 1, 2007 Ummm...impressions are never funny. They are like magicians and mimes. I have no use for them.

edjr 6,592 Posted August 1, 2007 I didn't hear about that. How is it rigged? Because people on FFT said so? I will admit, I think they pick some comics based on color and gender, so they don't end up with a house full of 10 white males. I'm sure they have a quota. I don't think I'd call that rigged. Franknbeans 46 Posted August 1, 2007 One of the finalists (Doug Benson) already has one of those 1/2 hour specials on Comedy Central. That smells fishy.
Strike 5,546 Posted August 1, 2007 I didn't hear about that. How is it rigged? Edjr pretty much nailed it. Read it here. I think it was in the Redtodd thinking about auditioning thread. Don't know for sure if it's rigged but seems very possible. I remember, either season 1 or 2, where some of the judges thought it was rigged and made a big deal about it because they thought their votes decided who got on the show, and the producers were like "no you were only part of the decision making process". Seemed kind of sketchy at the time.

Also, Jay Mohr was supposedly the brain child behind the idea originally and at one time (according to him) was the highest paid reality show host but now he is only listed as a consultant. RicemanX 20 Posted August 1, 2007 I didn't hear about that. How is it rigged? There was something in the 2nd or 3rd season when a comic didnt make it when the three judges voted that comic into the next round. THe judges thought it was rigged and made a huge deal out of it. Surprisingly, NBC actually showed that whole thing, making it feel like a publicity stunt go wrong

Seemed kind of sketchy at the time. They pretty much know who will make it in the early stages before the auditions. During the "audtions" there are comics who have appointments and are able to bypass the line of people outside. If I recall, none of the people on this show are people who sat out all night in line. Also, the thing with the judges walking out is true. They had already made up their mind who was winning and the "judging" was for show. It was actually in their contract, but the judges overlooked that (Carey, Butler). They do need a demographic so that there are certain amount of woman, minorities, etc. I stopped watching the show after the very first episode when Joe Rogan was a judge and called out ANT for using ancient material. The other two judges (Buddy Hackett and Desiree) told him it didn't matter and told Rogan to STFU. I turned it off right there. I checked it out again in the 2nd season just to see the people I knew in the Boston auditions. Any chance that I might watch it again was thrown right out the window when I saw ANT make it. Now he judges. My major problem with the show is that they try to bill it at America's top comics, when they are not. I have worked with a ton comics who you will never know (unless you go to your local comedy show) who are 100 times better than these stiffs that make it on. It's a flawed show for sure, but there isn't much else on during the summer.

Me_2006 14 Posted August 1, 2007 C'mon what's not to love, he buys tires on sale then swings from them! Ha, exactly. I loved Mel. At least his stuff was original and creative and not the same old butch chicks mocking themselves for being lesbians or fat guys talking about all the drawbacks to being fat. Some people tell one joke and then the judges say "ok, save it, come back later" How the fock can you know someone is funny from ONE joke? they could have stolen it from any # of comedians. Me_2006 14 Posted August 1, 2007 tribute to him opening with the same line? Well no, not for opening with the same line. Comedians do that all of the time though. Ever been watching Leno or any of the other talk shows when he has a comedian on, and it seems like they ask them questions to allow the comic to give part of their material and pretend like it's unscripted conversation? Plus, as you said, it's idiotic that they only tell a few jokes at the most, so if that's his most reliable material, he's bound to bring that out first to make sure he gets his foot in the door. Even though that didn't work too well for him, I enjoyed the character. It was something I'd never seen before.
