How bad is your orginization when a pitching coach turns down being your Manager

Recommended Posts

Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell turned down the Pittsburgh Pirates and their manager's job.

Hmmmm. Be a pitching coach or be a manager.

*raises hand* ill take this one....

would YOU do it?.....

if schilling came back and he probably wont...

the top 4 starters were worth 26.3 million...

the ENTIRE pirates 25 man roster is worth 38 mil....

until theres a cap to keep things balanced, who is going to turn down a cushy Torre-type gig to try to create a miracle in a small market? francona couldnt get this pirates team to the playoffs....

so unless he can skip off to a team in the 100 million range(and there are only 4 and maybe soon 5 or 6)...hes staying around...

You make good points but there is one thing....About the cap, if spending money was the cure all than the Mets would have many World Series wins. Ariz and Florida both beat the Yankees with a much much much lower payroll.

TheYankees havn't won since 2000 and they spend the most. I just don't like the argument of spending money to win.

For years and years George put his profits back into the team. Most of the other owners could care less.

If they did than maybe things would be as you say... "Balanced"

There are 8 teams at 100 million. 12 in the 90 million range.

he put his profits back into the team because his profits are in the hundreds of millions. Baseball needs a salary minimum

as much as it needs a cap, that's not a new idea. TV deals like the Stankees have should be shared equally amongst all

the teams. Because that deal is worthless without other teams to play, right? All major revenue should be split evenly. You

can talk about who won the world series in whatever year all you want, but this is about opportunity to win. Every NFL team

has a fair opportunity to win by making the right moves and draft picks. The lowly Browns and Lions have a shot to make

the playoffs. But the Devil Rays have no shot at all. Not this year or any year under the current system. Until they have as

good a shot as the Stankees to win that division, there is no parity.

If you look back the last dozen years or so, over 90% of the teams who play in the ALCS/NLCS and WS are in the upper third payrolls.

This year was a real anomaly, not the norm.

I doubt your 90% figure is accurate. Did you just make that up? Oakland and Minnesota have made the playoffs many times over the past 12 years and Cleveland, Arizona and Florida have all made the playoffs more than once in the last 12 years as well. Other low payroll teams like Cinncinatti, Colorado, Milwaukee, san diego and seattle have made the playoffs in those years as well.

The difference is that the Yanks and Red Sox make it every year. Payrolls DO matter.

milwaukee hasnt made it in 25 years... cincy? not since 1990...when florida made it, they werent small market..they bought all of their talent..only to do a quick sell off afterwards....they exploited the tainted system..

some divisions leave the door open for smaller market teams to make it..there will ALWAYS be some who make it...because the majority of the league IS small market....but it surely doesnt mean this system works..its not..

big markets in the WS and 2nd lowest rating ever...if it wasnt for bostons huge ratings, it wouldve been the lowest for a huge margin..no one wants to see this....

and the argument is the same...IF it was automatic...the mets would always make it in....well, you cant cure stupid spending... and the mets quest for all latinos doesnt mean this works...

2 things people miss with all of this...

if other teams cared..they would keep it balanced...

not true...many of these teams dont have the resources to spend 200 million...and if they could..the yanks would just go higher..

and a cap would also FORCE the royals and dbacks to spend a minimum amount..like the other caps do...

The DBacks have been digging out of the financial hole from the previous (Colangelo) regime. He is a legend here, but they overspent and have been shouldered with a lot of dead contracts.

oops...i meant devil rays...NOW, just the rays....

sorry...i surely didnt mean arizona....

they too, were able to overspend and take a chance and it paid off...but if they dont sell off like florida did..well..as you said..a lot of dead contracts....

with a cap...arod will STILL get paid...

brady, peyton and brett are still getting paid well in football...it just forces teams to be smart about moves...players like moss may take an incentive based low contract...and its just good for the game as a whole...

i dont see espn and fox promoting baseball as they say they do...they promote the sox and yanks...and those 2 teams dont need anyones help...

The DBacks were in the lowest 3rd of spending this year, at least in active contracts. In fact I think they were lowest of the playoff teams. They've done a good job building from within, and also re-upped players like Eric Byrnes who are veteran team leaders.

I agree with your initial point in general, although the DBacks (and Rockies, and others who have been pointed out) have been competitive despite the lack of a cap.

Milw made it this year. Cin in 1995 (within the pat 12 years). Florida had the 25th largest payroll when they won it in 2003. HTH
