wiffleball 4,797 Posted November 5, 2007 I didn't watch this abortion of a half-time 'show', but I get the luxury boxes had power! Sounds like a really stupid farking stunt to pull.
Cruzer 1,996 Posted November 5, 2007 time and place, time and place, time and place. nbc has the today show, nbc nightly news, dateline nbc, and meet the press. if and when i feel the urge to educate myself with current events, breaking news and/or general news events - i will turn into one of their news forums. i do not need (or want) to see it coming from the sports department - no more than i care to hear tim russert talk about match ups and keys to the game during his show. Seems to be general bored consensus. So - Devil's Advocate: Why the overwrought and overdone 9/11 tributes for weeks after 9/11 before the game and at halftime? People go to the games for entertainment - not to see their heroes weeping. If we wanted coordinated displays of jingoistic nationalism, we'd go to North Korea - not the NFL, right? Time & Place, right? BTW - already on the record as saying it was a stupid move.
plasma george 63 Posted November 5, 2007 I care very little about politics, but if you're going to make this stance that they should be open to more ideas, then you yourself should also be open to their views and not force them to believe something they don't want to believe. Man....something they don't want to believe ??? This is the definition of how dumb the average American is. "Don't confuse me with the facts, cause I'm too stupid and not educated enough to understand, so my minds already made up."

Very, very different IMO wiffle. 911/Green Tragedy / Theory Slight, arguable pandering by football broadcasters / Unmitigated politcally correct marketing by NBC Cause of cancellation of NFL games / No demonstrable effects on anything yet...let alone direct effect on NFL No major political party overtones at the time of "overdone" broadcasts / Highly politically charged Again, I find nothing wrong with pure environmentalism. It does p-me off, however, that everyone pays attention to green this & that and no one pays attention to nuclear proliferation. The environment will not cause the world to end anytime in the next 1,000 years. Nuclear proliferation has a solid +/- 20% chance to destroy our world within 100 years. wiffleball 4,797 Posted November 5, 2007 Very, very different IMO wiffle. Unmitigated politcally correct marketing by NBC Agree with you on nuke proliferation. But let me ask you about the part above; What does NBC hope to market? I keep hearing how GW is some ploy - then I naturally think - "so who's getting rich and HOW off of this?" I mean, NBC is owned by GE. One of the biggest Gas Turbine and Military Equipment producers in the world. Neither of which are going to benefit a lot by reducing the use of either/both of these things. How exactly is anybody (other than say, Toyota/ Prius) getting rich by marketing GW? FreddieMercury 0 Posted November 5, 2007 How exactly is anybody (other than say, Toyota/ Prius) getting rich by marketing GW? You just answered your own question. Toyota sponsors the halftime show, and they probably arranged this to push their new line of hybrids and promote their image as a green automaker. I recall seeing a lot of Toyota commercials during the halftime show. If they really wanted to be a green automaker, they'd bring back the electric car, but I digress. And the link between global warming and GE's military equipment is too indirect for NBC/GE to care very much. I think it was NBC that televised the big worldwide global warming awareness concert this summer.
GrassyKnollSniper 0 Posted November 5, 2007 it's nice to see the morons of the planet rail against anything that might benefit humanity. do us a favor, take the first space tourist flight to mars and make it a one way ticket I`ll bet you own a car, use electricity in your home, & cook your food with either natural gas or electricity. The way I see it, the only people who have a right to rail about "man made" global warming, if it exist, are the Amish. So if you`re not Amish, shut the f**k up. Global Warming is, IMO, fraudulent. To me, that is why in a sports context the 9/11 tributes are easier to accept, although I would prefer they weren't pushed in that context as well. How exactly is anybody (other than say, Toyota/ Prius) getting rich by marketing GW? Lots of folks besides Al Gore are getting rich off of GW. As to your question, GE is a major producer of wind turbines, clean-coal technology, and energy-efficient locomotives, jet engines, home appliances, and light bulbs. I got this information from the Oct '07 issue of Kiplinger's. GE actually was one of their recommended "green" stocks. However, I think in this particular case, the reporters' and producer's thoughts on the issue were much more influential in deciding to cover GW than was GE corporate pressure. bushy 0 Posted November 5, 2007 First of all, global warming definitely is real, and it definitely is being caused by human activity. Anyone who looks at non-partisan reports and research can see that plainly. I'm glad that they're at least trying to do something that raises awareness. Really? Because you say so? I hate it when the global warming side says there is a consensus. There is no such thing. This science is far from settled. Just because that's what you think, doesn't it make it so. You guys do a lot more damage to your cause when you state things that aren't true. Many researchers and academics claim it's all bull. A leading researcher from the top engineering and science school in the USA tends to sway my beliefs. And before you point me to some report or study that concludes the opposite, I can also point you to many professional academics and researchers that do not believe in man made global warming. You do realize that the earth has warmed and cooled since its existence. The earth's climate is not and has never been static. If humans are the source of the current heating, why did the heating not start until the 1970s? The industrial revolution had been going on for more than 120 years. Back in the '70s, all the newspapers and tabloids were screeching about global cooling. Now, it's global warming. Give it another 10 years, and we'll be back to global cooling. There's a reason that Greenland got its name. It used to actually be green, and the weather there used to be a lot warmer than it is currently.
Gephardt69 0 Posted November 5, 2007 I think the idea was to piss off a bunch of people so they'd turn their tv's off and save energy. it worked. of course no one's watching nbc on sunday evenings at halftime ever again but those are the risks you take. not like they were saving much energy. you know their studio was still breathing electricity with all the other stuff that was on even with those few lights turned off. That's kind of a reach, isn't it? I mean, MAYBE if it was only SNF, but all of their news programs, & daily shows too?

Wouldn't there have a chitload better marketing opportunties (say, a glitzy half-time show) for Toyota or GE than to have a bunch of numbnutz sitting in the dark for half an hour? Perhaps it's a global conspiracy of candle makers that's behind the great GW scam of '07.
Tango 0 Posted November 5, 2007 Perhaps it's a global conspiracy of candle makers that's behind the great GW scam of '07. I disagree that the $ theory is the whole story. It's certainly a part of it...the main component though is power. Unfortunately, GW has become the sort of issue that socialists park themselves next to (if not control). I would not hesitate to be more involved in environmental protection if I did not believe that this is the case.
westlak 1 Posted November 5, 2007 what's the big f'ing deal. nbc's going green. they might save some energy in the process. i see nothing wrong with it at all. calm down. If the NBC hypocrites really wanted to do something or the planet they could cancel the broadcast. Takes alot of lights to broadcast. Hey the TV is a light. Why don't you shut it off. Matt Foley 0 Posted November 5, 2007 I'm old enough to remember 20-30 years ago when all these (probably the same) climatogists were predicting that we were on the verge of a new ice age; now it's the other way around and we're all going to drown from the glaciers melting. Make up your minds already, idiots. I'm sure things haven't changed that much in twenty years (which isn't even a relative blink of the eye when compared to how long the Earth has existed), but yet we're supposed to believe that it has? Yeah, right. Pushing the global warming agenda nothing more than a way for scientists to keep their research grant dollars rolling in, along with promoting their anti-capitalist agenda. Twenty years from now it will be some other doomsday scenario that will provide these scientists with their job security.
