Just got killer deals on Blackberries from Verizon

Mrs. DaveBG and I have been w/Verizon for a while. Our contracts were up end of dec, but we were elligible for upgrades now.

 

Normally I hate signing up for 2 year deals, but they were so good I couldn't resist.

 

I got the Pearl for $50.

$300 - $100 (new every two) - $100 (advanced phone upgrade for going from RAZR to a BB) - $50 rebate = $50

 

Mrs. DaveBG got the World Edition (b/c she really needed the full keyboard) for $100.

$400 - $100 (new every two) - $100 (advanced phone upgrade for going from RAZR to a BB) - $100 rebate = $100

 

The key was the advanced phone upgrade. The new every two thing is kind of a scam b/c it's pretty much the same discount they give new VZ customers. When I called and told the CS rep that the fact that I am getting the same exact deal as Joe Blow off the street kind of left a bad taste in my mouf she trotted out the info about the advanced phone thing, which no other CS rep had told me about (I had spoken to a few reps over the past week or two).

I had spoken to a phone rep (who was EXTREMELY helpful). I actually started off by asking for Cust Retention, but she said she'd try to help me first. Basically, I told them that I was considering switching to AT&T (which I really wasn't) b/c I like their phones better and b/c I didn't like the fact that Joe Blow would be getting the same deal as I...a long time VZW cust...was going to get, but that I wanted to see what VZW would do to keep me and the wife. She told me about the $100 discount you get for upgrading from any "regular" cell phone to a data device. I guess they figure that if you're getting a device that requires a data plan it makes sense to discount it some more b/c they will more than make up the diff over the course of your contract. So, it might also work for the Voyager.

 

Anyway, I had the phone rep notate our account that we were elligible for both the New Every 2 $100 discount and the Advacned Phone Upgrade $100 discount. Then, went to the store and had no problems.

Why? B/c I signed up for 2, rather than 1 yr? VZW now prorates their early termination fees (they are all moving in that direction), so after a year I can get out if I want w/out paying the full $175.

 

Like I said, I normally hate doing a 2yr agreement, but I saved way more by doing that than it will cost me to early terminate after a year if I want. Had I only done a 1yr agreement the Pearl would have cost me an additional $260 ($60 more for 1 yr instead of 2yr + $100 new every two + $100 advanced device).
