We have another guy that wasn't allowed to play tag and got trophies just for participating when he was young.

 

When I was young we played pickup football and we played until someone quit or it got dark. I don't remember a time when someone quit even when behind by over 100 points. If you told me and my team before the game we could play and lose by 100 or not play at all, we would play. Did we hate the team that beat us? No, we wanted to get as good as they were. Did we want them to let up on us? No because if they did we couldn’t gauge how good we really were and we wouldn’t get better. I think if a 10 year old kid can take getting crushed so can a grown man, unless he couldn’t play tag as a kid.

Patriots CB Randall Gay was a guest on ESPN Radio's "GameNight" program and was asked about criticism the team receives for running up the score.

You hear people saying 'the Patriots are running up the score, they don't have any sportsmanship, they're the team everybody loves to hate because they don't have any mercy.' When you hear that kind of talk from people, what is your reaction and what would you like to say to those people?

"Basically, you have to ignore those people because this is a job. We're out there, and what are we supposed to do? Like we scored on defense, when Ellis [Hobbs] caught the fumble, should he have taken a knee because we were up by so much? We're out there to do our job, just like they're out there to do their job. It kind of makes me mad when you hear somebody from the other team's defense going 'they shouldn't have done thatl; that's disrespect.' Do we think it's disrespect when they went and picked up their checks for letting a team score 50 points on them? That should be disrespect, that you went to your owner and said 'All right, pay me for that game I just played.' You can't look at it like that. You have to go out there and do your best. If somebody is blowing you out, you have to play harder. You have to stop them."

This is getting beyond ridiculous. I had no problem with what NE has done up until going for that 4th down TD up by 4 TDs in the 3rd quater - that was just ridiculous. Kick the field goal! But what's even worse is people saying that someone should INTENTIONALLY injure a guy. Talk about classless. Let the Patriots feed their egos, but injuring a guy will solve absolutely nothing. I want to see the patriots lose as much as the next guy, but I don't want it to happen when some dickweed takes out a star players leg.

Don't make ridiculous analogies; it weakens your already flimsy argument. Life is not like that and the sooner you realize it the better off you will be. If you do not try your hardest at everything you do you are cheating yourself and your opponent. You play until the other side quits. Why should NE put in their second string if the other team didn’t and is still trying to win? Once the game is out of hand it is up to the losers to concede not the winner.

Where's the honor in basically telling a kid "if your not good enough to compete with the older kids, you should get mad at them and then try to hurt them so they won't play as hard against you".

 

Obviously people want to teach their children sportsmanship and most if not all will but there is something also to be said for teaching them to never quit and never take a hand out, earn everything you do.

Yes, on the field where they play football for money as their job, they are cut throat. They want to win. They work very hard to be SB champions and they spend a lot of effort on being the best in their profession.

 

Off the field, they have some pretty good guys who contribute significantly to the community by way of charities and many of them stay here after their careers to become HS coaches and meaningful members of society. Imagine that. You may want to actually look into the info on what they have "done" before you criticize them in this manner.

 

To compare anything that the Patriots do to what is going on in Iraq is a disservice to our soldiers who are fighting something that is real and putting their lives on the line every day is completely ignorant.

I disagree completely.

 

It's 4th down, you have three options:

 

1. A FG, which is automatic points and is still running up the score.

2. A knee, which any competitive player with any pride or dignity will say is even more embarrassing than having the score ran up on them.

3. Go for it on 4th down, and give the other team a chance to stop you, and not put up any points.

 

There's nothing wrong with them going for it on 4th down. They're giving the defense a chance to stop them and stop any extra points. They can't do that with a FG, and as I said, taking a knee is even more embarrassing.

 

If your defense can't stop the Patriots for at least ONE play...you deserve to be blown out.
