A question for Sux...

Holy sh1t....2.6 hrs to change a THERMOSTAT.....what it is under the intake manifold or something crazy like that?

Like I said above SUX, I can see 3 hrs to change the radiator, especially on a FWD vehicle.

But I found the parts online for considerably cheaper than what you did. Granted, a local shop won't give you internet pricing on parts.

 

Sorry to hear you took it in the poo hole BEG. Looks like it was necessary though.

 

Yea, I guess with the thermostat replacement requires removal of the cross exhaust pipes, and shitloads of air ducting.

As far as online pricing of the radiator goes, you get what you pay for

After looking at labor times and list prices, NO, you did not get burned.

The radiators themselves go from $295.00 up to $450.00 depending on whether or not your has what they call a HD radiator. (Heavy Duty)

Radiator labor book time: 3.0 hours

Thermostat book time: 2.6 hours

 

BEG, don't listen to anyone else here saying that you got overcharged. Unforunately you own a vehicle that seems to have expensive parts in focked up places to get to.

I'm a little miffed about the 2.6 hours for the Thermostat because he told me that since he had the radiator out, he went ahead

and changed the thermostat while it was easier to access. So it seems to me like maybe he tacked on more time than was really taken. Maybe not though.

 

Again, I sure appreciate your help. When will you be moving to the Southern part of our state again?

I could sure use a good (honest) mechanic.

What's done is done and even though it was a lot of money to drop, it sounds like it was right in line.

I just wanted to note that during my first year of college I drove a mid 1970's Pinto station wagon. I replaced the thermostat on that and it took like 15-30 minutes. I also drove a 1986 Nissan Pickup truck and replaced the thermostat on that. Same thing. So, I can unequivocally recommend both of those vehicles to replace your money pit if you're so inclined.

O.K., so I didn't know what this meant, and I googled it. I thought maybe Ed Zachary was a talkshow host that preached about making wise financial decisions. Then I found out about Ed Zachary disease. Was edjr saying that BEG's face looked like her a$$? Was ed saying that the Aztec had Ed Zachary disease?

GTI's, Jettas, and Passats are all great driver's cars. I sell cars and have a friend that did finance for a VW dealership. He told me that if I ever bought a Vdub to be sure to buy every warranty that they tried to throw at me. They break.

 

Look at some Nissans too. Every Nissan engine has a timing chain instead of a timing belt. They never need service. They take a look at the timing chain at 105K miles for the first time, but no mantinance is ever required.
