Trade advice - Brees for Marshall?

Recommended Posts

The manager with Brandon Marshall (and Adrian Peterson) has, at QB, Matt Cassel, Jeff Garcia, and Marc Bulger. None of these were particularly great options, but now Bulger's lost the starting job and Cassel has a bye week. The best things going on the waiver wire are Collins, Griese, and Frerotte--not exactly guys you want to put your full faith in.

Despite his lousy QB situation, he's still 3-0. However, given the complete lack of QBs out there, I figure now would be the time to try to swap Brees for one of his studs and turn my 0-3 team into something different. Here's my roster:

QB: Brees, Garrard

RB: LT, Thomas Jones, Graham, Slaton, Hightower, Morris, Felix Jones

WR: Edwards, Welker, DeSean, Bryant Johnson, Derrick Mason

TE: Gonzalez

K: Crosby

DST: NYG

Here's his:

QB: Bulger, Garcia, Cassel

RB: AD, Jacobs, Chris Johnson, Derrick Ward

WR: Marshall, Housh, Marvin Harrison, Crayton, Berrian, Courtney Taylor

TE: Witten

K: Kaeding

DST: San Diego

I think Brees is going to be special and finish as a top-5 fantasy QB this year, but Marshall would fill one of my biggest needs. The next step would be to try to swap TJ or Graham for Rivers, Favre, or Roethlisberger, all of whom are backups for their respective owners, all of whom are at 1-2 and need RBs. If I can pull that off, do you think it improves my team?

Leave your link and I'll respond--had a lousy draft, but hey, I can probably give you some help nonetheless.

That's a tough call. I love Bree's this year, but Marshall is a stud as well. If you can swing the 2nd trade, then I say do it. I don't know if you can survive very long with Garrard, so I would not do it unless you think the other owners will part with Rivers or Favre.

I agree you have to make sure you can swing the second trade. Giving up Brees to start Gerrard gets you nowhere.

I think that would be a great move for both of you and pretty solid all around. I'd pull the trigger if you can and hopefully you can make the next move to help your QB situation. If not, grab Griese since at least they'll throw and he could be the next Rich Gannon. Remember, he is in Gruden's offense!

Please see mine.

Tough... Marshall will be a top 5 WR, but Brees will be a top 5 QB. In that case I lean towards shipping Brees, but NOT with Garrard as your #1 and no one behind him. Don't expect him to resemble anything remotely like last years. If you can swing the other deal then I say yes... but I would get that one done first.

PS- I bet the Marshall owner is in love with the guy now and will be reluctant to give him up (especially if he is 3-0), but who knows.

Appreciate all the feedback. You guys hit on my hesitation--it would suck to not be able to get the replacement QB deal done. If I do it first, I suppose the downside is having thrown away an RB for a QB I can't as easily move. The other starters in my league are Romo, McNabb, Peyton, Cutler, Rodgers, Palmer, and platoons of Campbell/Hasselback and Delhomme/O'Sullivan. The last platoon has a few guys I'd want--Plax, Gore, Forte, Steve Smith--but he seems pretty happy with O'Sullivan off the waiver wire. Pretty much everyone else is happy where they are, so the trade becomes dangerous if the Marshall owner doesn't bite, too.

Maybe I'll just try one more week of Brees and supposedly-better LT and see if I can get the win.

yeah, i think you'd have to get the second deal done first before i'd even consider brees for marshall.

and i don't think there's any way you could trade a very low-end rb2 like thomas jones for rivers ...

if you could get rivers somehow, then i could see doing the brees for marshall.

I love Marshall this year. As long as you think you can pull of the 2nd trade. I would try to trade T. Jones first. Though you could get more for Graham.

I like the deal if you can make sure you can grab Rivers from another owner. Otherwise I would hold onto Brees and try to deal some of your depth at rb for an upgrade at wr.

Hey, thanks for responding to my question.

I agree with your logic, but I'm not sure that the owner you are referencing will go for a Brees-Marshall straight up trade. 1) Marshall has been on fire and will likely end up the best fantasy WR this year. (Brees is no slouch either but Marshall is blowing up). 2) If he traded Marshall, he doesn't have much depth at WR.

Maybe try to incentivize the trade by offering Braylon Edwards as well and improving your RB situation. SO Brees and Edwards for Marshall and Chris Johnson.

Goodluck.
