Police: McCain volunteer, Ashley Todd, changes ATM attack story

Recommended Posts

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police say a McCain campaign volunteer who reported being held down by a black man who then cut the letter “B” in her face has changed her story.

Police also say bank surveillance footage doesn’t show her at an ATM where she initially said she was attacked.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard says investigators gave the 20-year-old woman a lie-detector test and are “looking at some inconsistencies” in her story.

The student, Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, initially said a black man robbed her at knifepoint near a bank Wednesday night and then cut her cheek after seeing a McCain sticker on her car.

Todd, who is white, now says she was knocked unconscious and doesn’t remember being cut in the face. She now says she only discovered the wound later.

No arrests have been made.

Whoops!

ETA: And from Fixed Noise.

Several "inconsistencies" have emerged in the statements made by a John McCain volunteer who claims she was robbed at knife point in Pittsburgh by an attacker who cut a "B" into her face after noticing a McCain bumper sticker on her car.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard told FOXNews.com on Friday that Ashley Todd, 20, says she was groped by a robber and lost consciousness during Wednesday's alleged assault at a Citizens Bank ATM. She didn't initially report those details, Richard said.

'There were major changes in her story" before and after the polygraph test, Richard said. As for the wound on her cheek, "it's very shallow, it's more of a scratch."

Todd took a polygraph test late Thursday or early Friday after police discovered the inconsistencies, Richard said. The investigation is ongoing. Richard said Todd is still being considered the "victim" of an assault, and she noted that victims often tend to forget details of situations that happen to them under duress.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and searching for witnesses.

After a second interview by police, Todd is not as definitive about the assault, or the motives behind it, Richard said. She's also not sure if the robber took $60 from her as she initially reported but maintains it's missing, Richard said.

Todd received a call from the Republican presidential nominee and has spoken with her family. Barack Obama's local campaign team also issued well-wishes to the Texas resident.

However, just hours after the alleged assault was made public, some were raising flags about her account.

"There's just a lot of unanswered questions," one source familiar with the investigation told FOXNews.com. "The story just sounds very bizarre."

Police say Todd initially refused medical attention, though FOX News was later told she went to the hospital Thursday. A photo circulating of her on the Internet shows Todd with a black eye and a backward "B" on her right cheek, though the letter is faint.

Blogs and message boards, including on one of Todd's own Web pages, pointed to those details Thursday in raising skepticism about her account.

According to initial reports, Todd was working at a nearby phone bank before she was apparently attacked near an ATM.

Richard said the victim was withdrawing money at 9 p.m. Wednesday when a man approached her from behind, put the knife to her neck and demanded money. She said she gave him $60.

She told police the robber then noticed the bumper sticker, punched her in the back of the head, knocked her down, and continued to punch and kick her while threatening to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter.

"You are going to be a Barack supporter," she recalled the robber saying before he sat on her chest, pinning both her hands down with his knees and scratched the letter "B" on the right side of her face using what she believed to be a very dull knife. :overhead: Then the robber fled, she said in the police report.

Ethan Eilon, executive director of the College Republicans National Committee, told FOX News Todd was volunteering through his organization and that she had taken a year off to work on the campaign.

He said that her attacker became enraged when he saw she had the McCain bumper sticker, and yelled, "You are one of those McCain people." :overhead:

A police report does not describe the size or severity of the injury but says the knife was 4 to 5 inches.

Obama's Pittsburgh spokeswoman Allison Price later issued a statement saying "our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.

Ashley Todd, 20, of Texas, initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.

According to police, investigators working on the interview process detected several inconsistencies in Todd's story that differed from statements made in the original police report.

Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Diane Richard released a statement earlier today, saying: "Because of the inconsistencies in her statements, Ms. Todd was asked to submit to a polygraph examination which she agreed to do."

No photos of Todd are being released by Pittsburgh Police at this time.

The investigation is continuing as officials determine what charges will be filed.

"Earlier today, John Moody, executive vice president at Fox News, had commented on his blog that "this incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election. If Ms. Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.

"If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."

 WTG dumbass chick.

"Watershed event"

I think they're just posturing there. If and when McCain loses, this incident will have little to do with it.

Wow...the Obama supporters are loving life, huh?

I've stayed away from the political threads for the most part lately.

But...this has really just turned into a joke hasn't it?

I don't blame you guys I guess...if McCain was on the path to victory I'm sure RP and the gang would be acting pretty much the same as you guys are...

So enjoy these next few months guys. Your guy won the game.

I'm not going to enjoy it much though. My paycheck is about to take a big hit in 2009. But eh...hopefully the government spends my money wisely.

:wall:

I'm going to look at the history of the Democratic party and the history of Barack Obama and call bullsh!t on the "less than $250k per year" claim.

And for the record...

I was scheduled to pretty much piss away a year of my life in 2009/2010 to score a big payday with my company... so that before I am 30 I will have paid off my house, paid off my car, have no credit debt etc, and have a nice comfortable safety net in the savings account. Well that plan of mine is about to take a big hit.

My goal was to have no mortgage payment after I turned 30.

Barack Obama thinks I make too much money to achieve my goal.

So instead of me paying off a house...Barrack Obama will take my money and find someone else who needs it more.

So ya...that pisses me off.

And uh, for the record? Is there any legislation even PENDING?

What a ignorant fockstick. Obama takes office and Brad thinks his 42,000 year salary is going to be decimated immediately.

Even if you make 300k, your taxes aren't going to go up much. Since you'll be taxed less on your first 200k of income, it'll offset the 3% increase for a bit. I think at 300k, you paid an additional $200. If thats going to prevent you from the things you wanted to do, thats funny.

Don't ask these guys to think critically here. MUCH easier to plug the "Obama 'Socialist' because Obama sound like 'Terrorist'!" into their head than do actual math. :wall:

Wow, let's calm down a bit there Wiffle. Read my whole post, and the following one. Read on before you just go off like a whiny little girl. Again...

I will make more than $250k in 2010. With a Dem congress...I'm sure he'll have no problem getting his tax increases. So...I'm pretty sure I am going to get hit by Obama's tax increase. Or are you now claiming that even if I make more than $250/year.... I won't see a tax increase?

Now you can throw out #'s like $42k if it makes you feel good inside, however that was clearly not the case. But it's cool. I'm sure in your mind...you were quite proud of your post. Regardless if it makes sense or not...

I'm sure you clicked on the "add reply" button. Sat your big fatass back in your chair, smiled, and thought to yourself. Brad Gluckman just got owned. I called him an "ignorant fockstick"...nice

Now I think I've told you this before Wiffle. But the problem is nobody here is nearly impressed with you as you are with yourself. Nobody thinks you're "tough" because you can't seem to control yourself on a message board or can't stop calling people names on the internet...you're just a tool.

Oh...and please tell me you think Bigmoni's "math" in his last post is dead on...you do, don't you?
