1st Round Commentary

Recommended Posts

That's why I love this draft. You can hear about a bunch of stuff on paper, but when you get 12 pretty knowledgeable guys in a room, you never know what is going to happen.

That's why I want to slice and dice each pick to see if this is where we can realistically expect our opponents to take people, or if it is a "reach". There are so many times that we might think a player is a good pick at a spot (based on the rankings) but the general consensus is "I wouldn't touch him if you paid me". We're already seeing that.

deangelo williams and ladainian tomlinson are the two enigmas of the first round to me. no idea what to do with either of them. does LT2 have another first round caliber year in him? last year as "awful" as he was, he still finished in the top 10. but once a stud turns sour, there's usually no turning back. i cant shake the awful feeling of shaun alexander circa 2007. everyone figured he'd just bounce back for one more good campaign, and he sure didnt. i cant say i'll be drafting him in any league this year.

as for deangelo williams, what do we do with this guy? he was far and away the #1 rb down the stretch, yet no one seems to care. how is he a #11 pick? either hes a superstud or hes a super dud. why just assume jon stewart is going to start stealing a bunch of touches, when they were such a good 1-2 punch as it was down the stretch? honestly i dont know. for the last 10 games of last season, deangelo was on pace to shatter years by priest and ladainian in their primes. what do we do with that guy?

as for larry fitzgerald, no way id even come close to touching him at #4. i dont think any wr has ever been taken that high in fantasy football and been proven a good pick. trust me, i tried to take moss pretty high (but not that high -- like 7 or 8 maybe) in his prime, and it just didnt work out. wrs just arent THAT valuable in fantasy ball. people are going to draft fitz way too high this year. absolutely guaranteed. theyre going to base it all off of the incredible playoff run. this guy is not a superstud fantasy player to be taken high in the 1st round imo. hes a very good wr who is not the #1 wr out there. for the second straight year, he put up a monster week 17 game to pad his stats (130 and 2 TDs) against backup defenses. without that (and i realize you can make the "without" argument for anyone), hes a 1300 and 10 receiver. still great, absolutely, and still one of the top 5 wrs drafted for sure. but not sure he slips into my first round, and im positive i wouldnt take him as the top wr off the board or even think about sniffing him in the top 8.

that being said, i did not envy the #4 spot. i figure the obvious pick is turner, but i will be avoiding him this year. guys that go from nothing to greatness and a huge workload do not have a great history. he will disappoint from the top 5, though i can hardly fault the pick there. im not sure who i'd have taken that high as i didnt even really want forte at 3 if he'd fallen there. i probably wouldve talked myself into sjax at 4, but that guy kills one of my teams every single year. gore is old faithful and is a good solid mid 1st round pick every time.

I had some concerns about LT2 at the 1.09 spot. My concerns of Stewart taking away from Williams over-rode that fear.

I think your LT pick was a very good, safe, first pick from the 9 hole!

stewart did have double digit carries in over half of the games already last season. and deangelo was untouchable both in the fantasy world and on the football field. its weird that we all (yes, for some reason including me, for now) just kinda shrug that off and assume a big dropoff. this is a former first round pick we're talking about, and a guy many were super high on a few years back. if someone else like MJD had put up the numbers deangelo did last year over the last 10 games, he'd be going #1 in this year's draft. its just weird to me. dont know what to do with it.

Great discussion in the latter part of this thread. I also agree that LT2 and Deangelo are 2 of the biggest enigmas this year...I'd throw Westy in this conversation as well since he's getting a little long in the tooth.

This is why to me there's Forte, Mojo, ADP...and then a whole bunch of guys that all fit the "2nd tier" mold at RB this year. I'm glad I got 4th in this draft cause it's the ultimate worst case scenario for me in real life and I want to see what I can make out of it against 11 other experienced and knowledgeable mockers.

But as for the other RB's taken in round 1....I have reservations with most of them. Chris Johnson does not merit a top 5 pick in a non PPR format IMO. In addition I don't see the Titans being as good or efficient on offense this year cause I simply don't believe in Kerry Collins.

To me...LT2 is done. I saw most of the their games last year cause I had a couple of other players on SD on my fantasy squad but the guy looks like he's lost all of his explosiveness. He's had a pretty extensive workload career to date and he's reaching that age where stud RB's cease to be so. He's another guy I wouldn't touch this year.

Turner and his 370+ carries scares the crap out of me and it's well documented what that # of carries does to your probability of success the following year. Jackson is a stud but he's always hurt and the Rams have the potential to be God-awful again.

Deangelo....tons of talent but J Stewart is also extremely talented and looms like a huge cloud. If it wasn't for Stewart I'd group him with my other 3 "no brainer" 1st round running backs. But alas.....

In real life if I get the 4th pick and Forte, Mojo, and ADP go 1-2-3 I'm trying like hell to swap down the draft order with someone behind me....but if that fails I have zero reservations doing what I did here and taking Fitz.

Agree with everyone on DeAngelo Williams. He's one of the hardest guys we've had to try to project for in quite some time.

the more i think about it, the more i think if push came to shove, i might go ahead and take deangelo in that 3-5 range. im just not convinced id surely rather have the others than him. can anyone think of another rb that echoes this situation at all in recent fantasy history?

i just think, how silly will 10 people feel if they pass on deangelo and then he comes out and puts up 150 yards and 1-2 TDs a game all season long again... just like he has been doing the last 10 games that he played? id feel like a real idiot lol.
