Thigpin- interesting prospect? or not?

Recommended Posts

I just thought I'd get an opinion from a few who may have seen more of this guy than I have.

I saw one game, and it wasnt all that pretty, but I saw the kid do some things to make me label him as a 'player of interest'

I normally dont expect to see a third string QB step in and do some of those things. I'd fully agree, the kid has lots to learn, but I think he did better than I ever could have guessed.

what are your thoughts on the guy? Will he ever truly be a starter again?

or is he a kid who got lightning in a bottle for a few fantasy games on a poor team that was always playing from behind?

Nobody wants to reply to this? I didnt think it was that much of a loaded question.

While i'm no KC homer. I had plans of going after this guy this year. Thinking he was going to be something. Then they go and trade for Cassell.

Well if Cassell gets hurt, I'd have no problem starting Thigpen.

I have nothing "inside" to offer, but I was a little disappointed he wasn't given a shot to compete for a starting role in 09.

With Bowe entering year number three, and the always reliable Bobby Engram in the fold, he would have made a much sneakier sleeper then Cassel.

i think they said there is no guaranteed starter at any position. However, you don't pay Cassel the money they did and then go and bench him. Thigpen was deficient at the position, and while he did put up decent fantasy numbers, there was a lot left to be desired from a professional football perspective. Cassel, however, could be the real steal here.

With Cassel he does not really have much value. He was not an exceptional QB by any means, but in an auction league (especially ones where you play 2 QB) he was a good value for your money, because you could buy him for like $1 and he performed higher than that. Unless something happens to Cassel his year or he starts really sucking it up Thigpen is not worth $1.

He is worth keeping an eye on because that offensive line is horrid. It isn't beyond reason to think Cassel could get knocked out in the pre-season, or the regular season. Possibly a 20th round selection. Final pick type of thing.

KC was only 12th last year in sacks allowed, so there were 11 teams that fared worse than they did. Branden Albert should improve this year, having a full season under his belt. They also added Mike Goff who should help provide some stability on the right side of the line. They are really only looking for someone to step up and play RT at a high level, but the O-Line really shouldn't be tha6t terrible this year. Thigpen's issue wasn't not having enough time to throw the ball, he was just limited physically with what he could actually do on the field.

well, I thank all of you who replied.

My opinion is that he put up reasonable numbers when you consider he was the third string QB going into the season.

given how poor the team was as a whole, I would have expected a weaker performance from someone with little to no experience as a starter. Based on this, I still consider him to be a player of interest.

maybe he caught lightning in a bottle, or maybe he's just cooler under pressure than your average rookie.

I havnt seen enough to say.

Where his career goes from here is a matter of opinion, but I would certainly be interested in seeing what he can do with a better team around him. Limitations or not.

either way, if more people wish to reply to this, I'd like to see some more opinions.

Just because you weren't sacked doesn't mean you weren't under pressure. :shocking: There are plenty of offensive lines that look much better on paper than they truly are. Watching the Chiefs for a good portion of the season (as they only play 3 hours down the highway from me), I can tell you that Thigpen was rushed quite often, especially when they were using the Spread. The fact he took a lot of snaps in the shotgun and his reads were mostly 'quick-outs', also puts that stat line in the garbage pile.

I thought Branden Albert played very well last year, especially for a rookie. Bryan Waters is pretty good, made the Pro Bowl a couple years. Mike Goff should be much better than anyone that's tried to play RG since Will Shields left. Niswanger is a bit small and got pushed around a little bit up front, so I would say there is some room for improvement at Center. And I hope like hell they give Herb taylor the opportunity to start at RT this year, I think he would be much better than Damien MacIntosh playing RT. They didn't want to work Taylor at RT last year because they were concerned Albert wouldn't cut it or would have some injury problems. Albert did miss a few games I believe, and I think Taylor did pretty good at LT filling in for him. I think this line has the potential to be pretty decent. I'm more concerned about our receiver, LB and D-Line play than I am the OL at this point.

I really thought he had a shot at being a great sleeper pick this year (prior to Cassell's arrival). Unless he gets traded somewhere he has little value unless Cassell gets hurt and you are in a good position on the WW.

Too bad to cuz the kid played well on a bad team.
