Vick Is Flying With Philly!

Recommended Posts

Are you fully retarded or just suffer from a partial mental disorder? :music_guitarred:

So 99% of society is retarded? Most people think the way I do. Vick is a criminal and he is now being paid millions.

well maybe there is something wrong with our society for ruining 99% of Cons lives after they have served their time... what is the point of going to prison and serving time and being punished if when you get back out in the real world, you have no money, no respect, and a BIG STAMP THAT READS FELON "STAY AWAY!" cause guess what that leads too?? the 70% recidivism rate we have in America because WE AS A SOCIETY leave our criminals NO WAY possible to re create themselves, because WE ARE AFRAID OF LETTING THEM BACK OUT, and are happy labeling them all as "DELINQUENTS and LOSERS" who will never offer anything to our society except another spot in jail so that we all feel safer instead of growing a back bone and giving people a second chance like we would want, if our imperfect selves made a mistake.... on one hand.. you have to think wouldn't it be kind of cool to see a guy who screwed up really really bad, whether it was do to his upbringing or poor decision making... but wouldn't it be really cool to see him turn his life around and succeed..especially a black man at that, because whether you want to think it or not.. The justice system is still very racist and nearly 50% of the prison population is African American.... what you are forgetting is the real thing that Michael Vick brings to any team is HEADLINES, TICKET SALES, and LOTS and LOTS OF VIEWERS... and countless stupid stories on ESPN... but guess what all of these things bring in MONEY MONEY MONEY.. regardless if they are haters or lovers they will pay to WATCH... and people LOVE TO HATE...as some of you are displaying on this board...football isn't just about the games... all of you should know that by now

Vick deserves chance for redemption

Michael Vick's return to the National Football League as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles is really two separate stories. One is what it means to the Eagles' football team. The more important and more socially significant story is what it says about our society, our justice system and our ability to forgive and forget as a means toward an end of making the world a better place to live, for people and animals alike.

For the almost 30 years my wife and I have been together, we have never had fewer than two golden retrievers in the family, including Satchmo, who is now 13, and Payton (named for Walter, of course), 8, who are like our children now that our kids have all grown up and moved out. In my office here at Pro Football Weekly you'll find more canine collectibles than football. I am a dog fanatic.

I am also a fanatic when it comes to my love of this country and — battered, bruised and abused as it may be at times — our legal system. That system said the punishment for what Vick did was 23 months in a federal penitentiary. We're talking Leavenworth here, folks, not some country club built to house white-collar criminals and most of the governors of the state of Illinois. He has also gone from the highest-paid player in the NFL to bankrupt, and possibly the most ridiculed player in the history of the game. He has paid for his crime. Now it is time for him to prove he has learned from his mistakes and is ready to continue to rehabilitate himself and contribute to our society. But how can that happen if we deny him access to the one arena where he can do the most good?

PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and it released this statement in response to the Vick signing: "PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Philadelphia Eagles have chosen to sign a man who hanged dogs from trees, electrocuted them with jumper cables, held them underwater until they drowned in his swimming pool, and even threw his own family dogs into the fighting pit to be torn to shreds while he laughed. What sort of message does this send to young fans who care about animals and don't want to see them be harmed?"

It tells young fans that — unlike PETA, whose only response to the situation is to continue to horrify young fans with the kind of images it felt obligated to paint in that statement — in the NFL, and in America, we believe in second chances. If, as Vick, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, head coach Andy Reid and Vick's mentor, Tony Dungy, tell us, Vick's primary purpose in life is to earn our forgiveness by doing everything in his power to work toward protecting animals of all kinds wherever they may be, then why wouldn't we do all that we can to support him in that effort? As an NFL star committed to that purpose, he can do great things. Denied that stage, he is no more than a sideshow who will quickly be forgotten.

If he screws up again, ban him for life. But if he is sincere, there are few people in the world today with the pulpit to do more for the humane treatment of animals than the one the Eagles are giving Vick. It is time to give Michael Vick a second chance, a chance to do good. And to the folks at PETA, you might be a hell of a lot more effective if you ever figured out there can be no People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals without People for the Ethical Treatment of People.

The football part of the equation is much clearer and easier to explain. Vick has said, "Whatever Coach Reid decides on, that's what I will do. I'm just here to contribute and help win a Super Bowl." Donovan McNabb has said, "I pretty much lobbied to get him here. I believe in second chances, and what better place to get a second chance than here with this group of guys. ... He's no threat to me, not to (Kevin) Kolb. We had the opportunity to add another weapon to our offense." Those things said, the sky's the limit.

Reid would be foolish not to teach the nuances of the QB position to a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback who has been a poor man's Donovan McNabb, better on the ground but inferior though the air. But rest assured there will be a Michael Vick package, as well, that has nothing to do with QB. Imagine yourself as the opposing defensive coordinator when the Eagles line up DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin at wideout, McNabb under center and Brian Westbrook and Vick together in the backfield. Taking away all those weapons is impossible, so which poison do you pick, and how do you take it?

There is no "Rocky" sequel here in the City of Brotherly Love. Vick and every one of us who know his story will be forever haunted by his past. But if his future is as a leading voice for the humane treatment of animals, and the missing link in the Eagles' Super Bowl dreams to boot, it will certainly be a story worth telling.

that whole quote is bullchit!

ohhh, those poor criminals. how bout they dont commit crimes in the first place! and just because someone does their jail term doesnt mean they are reformed. and who cares if they are labeled? they should be! and then they should nut up and get a chitty job and just be happy they dont live in a country that would chop their hands off or hang them for what they did. my point is, THEY DECIDED TO BE A TURD. THEY MADE THE CHOICE! THEY SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH UNTIL THEY CAN PROVE OTHERWISE. NOT WHEN THEY GET OUT OF JAIL. you guys sound like a bunch of whiny bleeding heart liberals.

Well I'm not perfect but I never committed a felony and it was really easy not to.

Look at our society, your way is not working!

So the better option is to bury anyone who's committed a crime? Yeah, that'll work.

The point is that no one can change what happened. Any person has a right to be sickened by what he did. I am.

But at some point, you have to get past what he did. One of those ways you can try and get past what he did is to use him to do good in the community and make amends for his transgressions.

At this point and time, you can only look to the future. If Vick doesn't comply with that, he's only screwing himself. Football is all he knows. He has so much debt, he's an ex-convict with a kid, he has no other choices.

So let society use him to do good. I don't see the harm in that.

And if he's not playing in the NFL, he really has no visibility. So what good can he do at that point?

everyone deserves a second chance for their wrong doings... and i never said "YAY FOR CRIMINALS"... my point is simply... give them a second chance to make their lives better.. instead of vilifying them for the rest of their lives and making it nearly impossible to change their life for the better... all that does is force them back into a life filled with crime and has solved nothing.... prison itself is not very effective either.... if it was than the recidivism rate would not be 70%... that is because all people in prison learn is HOW TO BE BETTER CRIMINALS, and we offer them very few options that would be defined as a "light at the end of the tunnel" after they get out..everyone makes mistakes... whether intentional, poor decision making or being under a lot of pressure, or just plain not knowing any better...

So our society is MY way, not our way? I'm proud to be an American and live in the greatest society ever. I guess you'd rather live in Phurfurland. Not me, I'll take America with all it's core values and all it's flaws over any where else. Thanks.

Our society is only a shell of what it was. You are probably too young to realize that. You will understand in about 20 years because things aren't getting better.

I'm gonna guess you are a conservative. IMO, conservatives want our country today to look like the country did in the 1950's.

Last time I checked, no society has ever gotten better by going backwards.

I think the right is trying to turn back time but they're clearly outnumbered. It'll never happen.

How do they prove otherwise if they can't pursue the profession for which they are trained and best suited? I know, you say they should take a lousy job and work their way back into the public graces. But a sure way to frustrate someone to the point of desperation is to deny them the ability to earn enough to match the lifestyle they had pre-prison, or pay the debt incurred by their inability to work.

Now, don't get me wrong. Athletes are overpaid, and their lifestyles are by and large ridiculously overblown. But we as a people have made that happen. There are no fantasy leagues, websites, forums, tv networks, etc, devoted to plumbers or physics professors. If there were, they'd be making the obscene dollars that athletes make. We...you and I...feed that monster.

I think Vick is an a-hole. I thought that long before the dog incident. And I don't believe his contrition now. My guess is he's being coached in his demeanor and comments to the media. Additionally, I don't think much of him as a football player. Great athlete whose skill set is more Tavaris Jackson than Peyton Manning. But he did what the courts mandated. He's in the process of doing what the league mandates. And pro personnel people, who forgot more about football this morning on the crapper than any of us will likely ever know, think he still has value.

Every industry, company and organization has the right to determine whether or not they'll hire a felon. The NFL has repeatedly said that it's ok. If the presence of criminals/felons/individuals of interest like Leonard Little, Vick and the dallas cowboys on your TV screen offends you, it's your right to turn it off. Don't participate in football related games, activities and message boards. If not...if you watch games, pay for Sunday Ticket, own a jersey of ANY NFL player, collect trading cards, have a poster in your room...than you're a hypocrite without the strength of your own convictions. And hypocrisy is far more dangerous to the state of our nation than whether or not Vick plays football.

I didn't want to say anything. I can't remember which ones were excited about Adam Jones (the one that sucks at his sport) last season.

Jones is a fair larger pile of dogsh!t then Vick is.

Jones, Tank Johnson....sh!t, half the guys they signed last year were convicts. I don't care if people want to question Vick's character, hell I wish the Eagles wouldn't have signed him either, but Cowboy fans seriously need to keep their mouths shut after the filth they've had on their roster over the last twenty years.
