Haverchuck 0 Posted October 20, 2009 I havn't seen the packers play much this year, so I was wondering what everyone thought of this guy. In the 2nd half of the 2007 season, this guy was unstopable and had a bunch of long runs. Last year he started slow and some say it was due to not being in camp, and then others say he was bothered by a hamstring injury. The Packers didn't change anything in the offseason so they are either too invested into Grant or they truly believe that he can be the man there. I was listening to one of their early games this year on the radio and one of the announcers made a statement that the play calling is way too predictable. He said that they only really run Grant on 1st down. This has stuck with me so I monitored it yesterday and he had something like 15 runs on first down and 9 runs on any other downs. I'm not sure of the percentage of throws vs runs on 1st down though. The packers seem to throw in the red zone and when they get close to the goalline they have been working Kuhn into the mix more. Surprisingly Grant has still been consistant in my league averaging about 10 points every week, although he only has 2 TDs. He has played some easier run defenses and he has a good matchup against cleveland next week but his playoff schedule isn't the best. The O-line hasn't been very good this year, but they have had some injuries and they are focusing on improving the issues there. Any homer insight as far as how hard he is playing. Does he have poor vision or something? Also, it seems as though he does well with screen plays. Thoughts?
Filthy Fernadez 2,696 Posted October 20, 2009 I drafted him last year when the Packers said they'd integrate him more in the passing game but it never happened. He actually had less receptions last year than in 2007 which sucks if you're in a PPR league and you wasted a 2nd round pick on him. I read something recently that he is not picking up on the pass blocking like they'd hope he would.
flat_earth 0 Posted October 20, 2009 Ryan Grant is a very average RB. His best traits are his durability and his ability to operate effectively in a zone blocking scheme. His deficiencies are pass blocking, pass receiving, short yardage, elusiveness, and any type of running that requires him to follow lead blockers. What you have seen so far this year from him is what you are going to get: a ton of carries for somewhere between 50-125yds and a TD here and there. He plays on 1st and 2nd down running plays, and catches the occasional screen pass. The coaches know he can't block, so he's off the field on all obvious passing downs. The 2007 2nd half explosion is gone because that O-line is gone. Grant is not good enough to succeed on his own without a good line. I expect the Packers to address the RB position in the coming draft. It's a major weak spot on the team IMO.
bluesrams2 0 Posted October 20, 2009 Just traded him for Jacobs. Don't like what I've seen out of him so far, even when he played the Rams he looked slow and plodding.
PanicAttack 13 Posted October 20, 2009 Very average to say the least. However, I will say that I can say something positive about him he is really not that bad as a RB2 in PPR. Avg 12 points a week 13,12,10,11,bye,12. So i would not say waste. Not going to win you a week but should not lose it for you either...
Haverchuck 0 Posted October 20, 2009 Just traded him for Jacobs. Don't like what I've seen out of him so far, even when he played the Rams he looked slow and plodding. Grant has outperformed Jacobs so far (not by much) and Jacobs still has his bye in week 10. Jacobs has the better playoff schedule in weeks 15 and 16, but if you need to win now, I would have stuck with Grant. Jacobs already had his easy part of the schedule. Plus there is no question that Grant will be getting all the carries. I'm just not sure who would be a good trade option if your looking to deal Grant. donhaas 18 Posted October 20, 2009 Kuhn has been vulturing a lot of those close touchdowns... they run that quick FB play and sometimes it works.... plus Kuhn has been catching some short TD passes, too... You can't expect that to go on all season. The o-line has been playing terrible so far... not just the blocking but penalties bringing back nice runs..... If Tauscher can come in and be effective and Princess Clifton can make it through a game, the O-line could hopefully develop something. His schedule is pretty favorable and the weather is getting colder.... Rodgers has proved he can move the ball so the opportunities will be there.... Say what you want about Grant, but he runs hard and he finishes runs well.
ROYALWITCHEESE 0 Posted October 20, 2009 The guy gets a bad rap. He is big, fast, durable, and physical. But like an earlier poster mentioned, he is not elusive. In essence, if the O-line is blocking (which they have yet to do consistently) you will see the '07 Grant. In fact you see glimpses of it now, when he is able to hit the hole hard he rips off big gains. The problem is that holes have been few and far between this season. He is either running into a stacked line or getting hit in the backfield a lot of the time. Part of the reason is McCarthy's non-commitment to the running game. He'd rather sling it 60% of the time, leaving their running game all too predictable. I'm not an NFL mind, but what he fails to realize is that if he mixed it up a little better, both aspects of the offense would be better off. All in all, his best games are still to come this year. It's getting colder, and he gets stronger as the season wears on...
cubbie5150 0 Posted October 20, 2009 Upside is non-existent as long as McCarthy sees fit to have the FB get the ball at the goal line. Also, I'm not saying Grant is the 2nd coming of Marshall Faulk, but why doesn't the GB staff run more screen plays to Grant? It might, you know, help slow down opposing pass rushers at least a split second.
da_mane_man 1 Posted October 20, 2009 lol, i want to trade him for jacobs too. i've already proposed the trade. now i just have to see if the guy accepts it.
Haverchuck 0 Posted October 20, 2009 Early week 7 reports are saying that Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton will be out for the Cleveland game. Then Grant plays the Vikings, Tampa, and Dallas. He actually had 100 combined yards last time at Minn. In my League: The Browns are giving up 26.7 points a game to RBs through 6 games The Bucs are giving up 23.8 points a game to RBs through 6 games The Cowboys are giving up 17 points a game to RBs through 5 games

JT 137 Posted October 20, 2009 since the packers brought in ahman green and dominic rhodes for workouts..i dont think theres a ton of confidence in grant.... Wouldn't this be more an indicator that they're not happy with Jackson and/or Wynne? When were they brought in? They certainly didn't bring in either of those guys with the thought they could be their #1.

The only owners who are disappointed are the ones who drafted him thinking he was a true #1 back. Sorry Charlie, he's a solid #2, deal with it. He'd be a bottom rung #1 if his O-line was better/healthy but anyone who actually looked at the GB line situation before the season would know they had issues. All_The_Way 0 Posted October 20, 2009 i thought i was getting a solid backup #3 RB with the possibility of becoming a #2 with the stats he put up in the last couple years. boy was I wrong. But whats worse for me my #1 RB is forte. I could have used grant to produce. I thought he still had it in him I played him in front of forte last week because of the matchup. IMO, he should have had more production.. Got me worried now.

berven 0 Posted October 20, 2009 We've been worried about Grant here in Packerland. Really, though, the problem is the offensive line. Grant is a straight-ahead runner who can bang decisively through a hole and into the clear--but there has to be a hole there. If there's not, he looks ordinary, because he's no Crazylegs who does a lot of jukin' and jivin'. The Packers were interested in Green because their backup RBs are hobbled. I also have this suspicion that they'd like to bring Ahman back and introduce him as the starter when the Vikings come to town, just to take a little steam out of the Favre visit. Brett can listen as Ahman gets the standing O. I think Green will contribute as long as he stays healthy, which will be for a quarter or so.
