He was 61. Nicknamed "The Assassin," Tatum died of a heart attack Tuesday in Oakland, according to friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks. On Aug. 12, 1978, Stingley, playing for the New England Patriots, ran head-on into the hard-hitting Tatum on a crossing pattern. The blow severed Stingley's fourth and fifth veterbrae and left the receiver paralyzed. Tatum said he tried to visit Stingley at an Oakland hospital shortly after the collision but was turned away by Stingley's family members. Stingley died in 2007. CurleyQ 0 Posted July 27, 2010 I remember Tatum as a miserable human being who never said he was sorry for the hit on Stingley, never went to see him, regardless of what he claims (per written reports back then)and in fact tried to capitalize on his nick name "assassin", afer the incident. He may have been a good player, but he was a head hunter and showed no remorse to a man that at least deserved THAT much.

Tatum went to visit Stingley to get press for his book long after the damage was done. Stingley did not want to deal with the circus show. One guy had class. The other was an ass. The cause was a massive heart attack, according to friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks. "It was tough on him, too," Hicks said of Tatum. "He wasn't the same person after that (hit). For years he was almost a recluse." Tatum, though, showed no remorse for his headhunting ways in a 1980 book, "They Call Me Assassin" and the follow-ups "They Still Call Me Assassin: Here We Go Again" in 1989 and "Final Confessions of an NFL Assassin" in 1996. Yeah, a real focking recluse....
