UFC 131

This is a pretty average card. I will be interested in the Maia-Munoz fight. I mean they might not be that popular to the casual fan, but they are 2 top 10 MWs in the world. Munoz improving every fight.

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha - a lot of replacements on this card. Rocha is one. Cerrone is a former WEC title holder and has been on a roll. Offers good kickboxing and good submission skills. Rocha is real good on teh ground, not sure what else he has.

Pick: Cerrone UD.

Dave Herman vs. Jon Olav Einemo - Who knows what Einemo will have. I have no clue why he is signed. He hasn't fought since 2006. He is a submission specialist, I think the only one to beat Roger Gracie in a grappling contest. Herman is an up and coming fighter, well-rounded. Most all of his wins by finish.

Pick: Herman 1st round TKO.

Mark Munoz vs. Damian Maia - Munoz will most likely look to keep the fight standing. Maia could get the TD, he got a surprising one vs. Sonnen where he went on to submit him. Munoz is becoming well-rounded though. He also has more overall power. I see Munoz keeping this on the feet enough and then finishing Maia.

Pick: Munoz 2nd round KO.

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes - Florian is dropping to 145 for the first time. Nunes is on a roll beating Mike Brown. He is a quick striker with some BJJ game. I see Florian as the bigger guy for once, and imposing his size on Nunes, getting the TD, and the submission.

Pick: Florian: 2nd round rear naked choke.

Junior dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin - great HW fight. Still a lot of questions that will be answered in this fight. How will Carwin's gas tank be? Will Carwin's weight change have an impact on his power? How is JDS's take down defense? Will Carwin try to wrestle or throw his bombs? Carwin can knock anyone out. But he hasn't faced a guy with the movement of JDS. JDS will move a lot and has good boxing technique. I think JDS survives the 1st and get sa tired Carwin in the 2nd. Carwin will look to clinch if he doesn't get his way early.

Pick: JDS 2nd round TKO.

Is that the same Herman who fought the other night on the free Spike card? If so, he had a pretty good knockout...if I am remembering correctly. There were some ok fights and knockouts on that the other night...for a free fight night, that is.

I'm actually excited for this week. I have a favorite fighter in every one of these fights.

Mark Munoz vs. Damian Maia - Big fan of Munoz mainly because he is from the bay area and he seems like he's one of the only asian american fighters doing well in the sport right now. Maia has looked very average since his loss to The Spider. But he could catch anyone in a triangle at any time. So this will be a great fight to watch.

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes - I love watching Florian fight. Winner of this will probably fight Mendes for the #1 contender spot. Or they woudl get the title shot if Mendes loses his next fight.

Junior dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin - Big fan of Carwin. I'm guessing this fight will end in the 1st round with a TKO.

Cerrone crushes Rocha.

I think Munoz is smart enough to keep the fight standing since he has the wrestling to keep the fight where he wants to and he plasters Maia with his hands.

Einemo spent 5 years training at Golden Glory which is a great striking camp not to mention his excellent grappling credentials, I don't think the UFC signed him and originally had him slated to fight a top tier HW like Carwin because they wanted to see him get crushed. I think he finishes Herman however he wants.

Florian vs. Nunes is a tough one to pick, hard to believe Kenny is dropping in weight for the 4th time in his career and I think the cut takes a lot out of him since he said he had 15lbs. to go the day before the fight which is a significant % of his bodyweight. If he recovers well from the cut then I'd imagine he'll be standing in the ring at about 155-160 which gives him a big time advantage over Nunes. I think the cut cuts into his tank and Nunes outworks him to a decision.

Carwin vs JDS should be really fun to watch and as much as I like Shane I'm gonna give JDS the nod here. If I was in his camp after the Roy Nelson win they had to know he'd be fighting an elite wrestler in his next fight whether it was Brock, Shane, or Cain so I have to think he's been working on that alot in the past year and I think he employs a sprawl and brawl strategy against Shane and picks him apart with his quickness. The only way Shane wins this is by getting him against the cage and pummeling him there like he did to Mir but since he magically weighs 20lbs less going into this fight then he ever has before (after the steroids scandal last year) I wonder if he's gonna have the strength and bulk to employ that strategy.

I like it though, should be a real fun card to watch.

Just because Alav trains with Overeem doesn't mean he can finish a guy standing. He will look for a TD and a sub and that is it. He is solid standing, but has little power. Olav wants the fight on the ground.
