kmbryant09 1 Posted October 10, 2011 If the team holds onto the #1 pick, it's pretty much a given that the Colts take Luck. Ideally, Luck would see how well Rodgers is doing and allow the team to let him sit on the bench and learn from Manning. Manning could play for another 2-3 years then transition into coaching and let Luck take over. Of course, that assumes Manning has no plans to keep playing into his early 40s like some QBs. Well thanks for the enlightenment. I write for a Colts' blog, and it is anything BUT a given that the Colts would take Luck, and for so many reasons: -Manning is under contract for 4 more years. -Luck's contract would be for 4 years. -You can't invest $30-35 million into the QB position. -This team needs to many other improvements: Coaching staff, DT, DE (Freeney is 32, Mathis a FA), 2 or 3 new starters on the offensive line, 2 or 3 new starters in the secondary. IF, and it's a big IF, Manning comes back 100% this off-season, the Colts will trade the #1 pick for a King's Ransom. They could realistically collect a top5 pick, a 2nd rounder, and a quality starter for the #1 pick.

Doesn't change my point whatsoever. I assumed the Colts had the #1 pick. You still can't roster Manning & Luck together for 4 years. It doesn't work financially. Luck would be a Free Agent by the time Manning's retired. And this team doesn't even have the pieces in place to re-build around Luck. With Wayne/Mathis/Freeney/Addai/Clark/Saturday they are in win now mode. Why waste the rest of their careers in Indy by drafting a developmental QB when you could turn that pick into 3 or 4 quality starters to make a few final SB runs with a healthy Peyton Manning.
