parrot 789 Posted October 25, 2013 Anybody have any experience with prepaid phones? I'm looking for an alternative for my Dad's phone. He doesn't use it a ton and it will cost $30 a month to add him to my plan. Anybody know much about the rates for the prepaids and how big a pain it is to add minutes and whatnot? Drizzay 710 Posted October 25, 2013 They are good for conducting illegal business. Or so I have been told.
Vikings4ever 547 Posted October 25, 2013 I've got prepaid through T-Mobile, as I don't use my phone much either, and I love it. Just every couple months (however often you need it), you go online and add minutes using a credit card. I think it's like .20 cents a minute.

I was just looking at the T-Mobile plans. If I'm reading it right you can get a discounted rate by purchasing more minutes, down to .10 a minute if you buy a 1000 minutes. I like the sounds of that. Do you get any reminders or alerts when your minutes get low, or is it something you have to monitor?

When your minutes are low and you call someone, you get a voice message before it connects that you're low on minutes. As for the 1,000 minutes, it depends on how much your dad talks. The minutes do expire, after a year I think, so I go for a lower amount, even though it does cost more per minute.

Thanks again for the info. I think I would probably buy the 1000 minutes even if we end up eating some just for the simplicity of it.

TimmySmith 2,782 Posted October 25, 2013 That might be an option too. How reliable is the service on these things? It uses the same towers so it's as good as whatever carrier supports it. These phones are utilitarian smart phones, so do not expect it to be fancy. We have had the current one for 2 years and it still talks, texts and wi-fis as good as it did on day one. Worst case, you don't like it, you use up the minutes and give it to a kid for a wi-fi device.
