Superhero League, Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am still wanting to try to pilot a Superhero League, if I can get enough people interested.  To really do it right, I would like to have two independent Conferences of 12 teams each, an Avengers conference and a Justice League conference, with teams named appropriately for their conference, with an independent draft for each conference (one copy of each player in each conference), with the conferences playing each other during the course of the regular season--but I will do it with fewer teams or even just one conference if need be, just to see how the superpowers aspect works out in real competition.

You see, the idea behind a Superhero League is that there is a list of 20 superpowers (see below), and each team can use one superpower per week (and each superpower only once per year), to gain an advantage over their opponents.  Since an objective league commissioner is required to curate the superpowers, I would not compete in the league, but rather function as the objective commissioner.

The superpowers are:

Home Planet Advantage - Adds 10 points to your overall team score (may only be used during a home game).

Super Strength - Double one of your own players' scores.

Super Speed - One of your own players will get credit for twice their actual rushing/receiving yardage.

Big Arm - Adds 10 yards to every completion by your QB.

Big Leg - Adds 30 yards to every FG made by your Kicker.

Big TDs - Every player (including D/ST) on your team will receive 2 additional points for every TD they score--so TDs are essentially 8 points.

Time Travel - Use a score from a specified previous week for one of your own players (can even be used on an injured or bye week player).

Healing - Start an injured (or bye week) player and receive the average of that player's scores for all previous games in which he played.

Shape Shift - Start a player at a different position (start a RB as your TE, for instance).

Doppleganger - Start the same player in two slots (RB or WR only, since they are the only positions with multiple starting slots).

Parallel Universe - Start 2 players of the same position in 1 starting slot (essentially giving your team an extra starter).

Imitation - Substitute one of an opponent's players' scores for one of your own players' scores.

Triple-Double - When you and an opponent are starting the same player, you and your opponent will get triple points for that player.  (It won't help you win the game, but it will give you--and your opponent--a total points boost.)

Omniscience - Receive points for your best possible lineup out of all the players on your team, starters and bench ("best-ball" lineup).

Subterfuge - Replace one of an opponents' starting players with a player of the same position on their bench (may NOT be used to start an opponent's injured or bye week players).

Impotence - Makes one of an opponents' players score zero points (even if they are using a superpower on that player).

Iron Shield - Reduces your opponent's overall team score by 10%.

Impenetrable Fortress - Doubles your Defense/Special Teams points.

Negation - Cancels whatever Super Power is played by your opponent.

Power Grab - Use one of your opponent's remaining powers, even if you have already used that power yourself.

The playoffs would be a total points Battle Royale among the top teams (with the remaining superpowers still in play), with the lowest-scoring teams being eliminated each week of the playoffs until only the league winners remain.

So let me know if you'd be interested.  We would probly need 10-12 at a minimum just to give it a shot, but it would be great if we could get twice that and do the full 2-conference set-up.  We can do it as a free league just to see what happens, or we can make it $10-$20 just to be interesting.

Anyone feeling the pajamas and cape today?

I think its an interesting idea and I enjoy your posts here which I know take time................... so I would play if there was enough interest.

I wish we could figure out how you could be an owner as well.

There are plenty of random number generators which could be of use but some of the powers do require additional information transmitted ahead and using randomness the tactical choice of when to use a power would be lost. It still could be fun the random way though, and you could be an owner.

No, I don't want it to be random.  The idea of only using each power one time, and a maximum of one per week, introduces a whole menu of strategies that wouldn't be any fun if they were decided by a dice roll.

I just don't see any other way at this point, until someone develops the software to track the powers--which is being used, and on which player (if applicable).  Since we can't currently store that in any league hosting format that I know of, players will have to email me that information before the first kickoff of each week, and as Commish, I will have to be responsible for manually adjusting every team's score in accordance with their superpower.  So to that extent, the "live scoring" feature won't necessarily be gospel, although it can give you a pretty good idea of how you are doing based on knowing the power that YOU used (although you'll have to wait until Tuesday to find out what superpower your opponent may have used against you--since I don't want anyone modifying their lineup based on prior knowledge of the punishment about to be unleashed upon them.

That said, I'm axually thinking of developing that kind of software for Axe Elf's Fantasy Football Emporium & Nightclub ("It's ÆFFEN Great!")--but I kind of want to see how it all plays out in real life before I try to market it as a thing.

But hey, thanks for volunteering as a guinea pig; we have to start somewhere.

That's one.  Who else is feeling the pajamas and cape?

I still want to do this.

Maybe if I start talking about it BEFORE the offseason, instead of waiting until August--and now that I'm doing fewer leagues in the twilight of my career, I'll have even more time to devote to it.

Anyone?

Bueller?

When do you decide what super power to use, before the week starts or after it's over?

When do we find out what super powers are used?

What happens if powers contradict(?), each other?  For example, let's say I start AJ Dillon and my opponent uses the "Impotence" power to give him 0 ("even if they are using a super power on that player"). What happens if my super power is "Negation"?  I'm not using a super power on Dillon, it's on my opponent.  Who's super power wins?

Powers would be declared before the start of the games on Thursday, so no one gains an advantage by knowing what happened in Thursday's game before declaring their own power.

I would allow people to specify a contingency plan if they were waiting to see if a "Questionable" player would play on Sunday, such as, "If Derrick Henry plays on Sunday, then I want to use the 'Super Strength' power on him, but if he is out, then I want to use the 'Big Arm' power on my Thursday QB."  Then Henry would get the benefit of the power if he starts his Sunday game, but if he's ruled out, then the Thursday QB would retroactively get the benefit of the power.

Possibly after the Monday night game, but more likely it will be Tuesday before I would get everything processed on the site, since I will have to go in and manually adjust the scores of every team that uses a power that week.

I am hoping to use a "premium" MyFantasyLeague setup for the league.  I even got around to starting to set up the site a couple of years ago:  https://www47.myfantasyleague.com/2020/home/69959#0

Using the Negation power cancels whatever power is used by your opponent.  So if your opponent uses the Impotence power on Dillon, and you use Negation, the Impotence power would be cancelled (however, it would still count as having been used for the season, and no longer available for use in future weeks).

You don't have to invite Axe Elf to dinner to participate.
