Taking my first violin lesson tonight...

Recommended Posts

From a pretty musical family.  I do sing... And own 3 guitars, and a mandolin, but can't play more than a couple cords.

I've always wanted to learn the violin/fiddle.  Well... My daughter has asked to learn it and I thought well why the heck not at least give it a shot... Maybe in 5 years I'll be passable enough to fiddle a little tune for myself.  So she and I are taking violin lessons and Mrs...beer and the boy are taking guitar lessons at the same time.

I have fat carnie fingers so I'm a bit worried I won't be able to be able to finger the strings correctly, but we'll see.

If not I'll switch to the mandolin which I really do dig too... Ironically I learned the mandolins and violin the same chords.

That's what she said.

Yeah I knew there was something on the tip of my tongue about fingering or fiddling there... 😎

Until now, upon googling, I never realized that the violin and fiddle were the same thing.

I think it's awesome what you are attempting to do and hope you stick with it.

That’s cool man, good for you.  Fun doing it with your kids too.  I did guitar lessons back in the day with my daughter, we ended up performing Van Halen together at the end of the year recital.  Eddie, I was not. :D

I hope so as well... I guess there no reason not to try? Even if I suck for awhile... Maybe eventually.  I'm not being forced like a kid and understand why I will need to practice etc.  It's just... Is my brain still malliable enough to learn something like that.  Ya man... Thanks.

I don't think the brain gets too old to learn things persay, but the body the brain is in at a certain age can say fock it and move on to something else too easily.

This is all on you and that's the beauty of it.  If you succeed even to a relative place in your mind it's an accomplishment and something I can't see myself doing currently so kudos and I hope you stick with it.

Thanks!  We did You Really Got Me.  I got to do the two solos, which aren’t all that hard (hence us doing that song), but it is amazing how much faster things seem when you are on stage.  I’ve performed a lot in my life, but mostly doing things I was very good at.  This was different and I darn near peed my pants.  :D

Anyway, back to the violin, are the strings basically the 4 high strings of a guitar? (D, G, B, E). Viola I know is F’d up.

GDAE

There's a fingering chart here:

Interesting, thanks.  Seven 1/2 steps between each string, whereas a guitar has five (except 4 between G and B).

Same daughter picked up the ukulele later in life, I think that has yet a different pattern.  You’d think those string instruments could agree on one pattern.

It was pretty fun... Half hour went pretty quick.

I feel I picked it up pretty well so far... I have enough residual music theory from singing it helped. 👍
