42% of Gen Z have diagnosed mental health condition,

So lazy ---if they had any ambition that could get that number into the 80's.

We can certainly make some improvements, but can I ask you a question..

Would it truly have a long term positive effect on your wife's condition if people stopped asking her questions like that? Wouldn't we be kind of be proving their point for asking such dumb questions?

Isn't the whole point of accepting mental illness that it isn't just a mood swing or reaction to what people are saying or whatever other simple explanations people like to blame it on.

If you ultimately want to just pass on the topic and not discuss with total internet stranger, I get it.

Good question, Keanu.  I have thoughts and I will post after work.

@jonnyutah - The short answer is yes, I believe it would help in the long term positive effect, but I think I need to be clearer about what I was saying.

What those questions represent are a lack of understanding and viewing it as other diseases.   What I see a lot is the undercurrent the belief that mental illness = in your head = something that isn't a physical problem.   It's not treated the same way as say somebody with a kidney disease, and IMO this is where it hurts the long term process of healing that many people need.

What I mean is that if my wife had a kidney disease she would probably require meds.  She would probably also require some life changes.  Her boss wouldn't blink an eye if she needed a day off because of that disease.   But that same boss doesn't give the same consideration if she needs a day off for her mental illness.   People don't handwave excuses as much for other diseases.  I don't think she would field questions and suggestions for other diseases.  She's been told to think more positively, to go to church, etc.    The reason I included life changes above is because, yes - retraining your thinking and some life changes are part of the equation, but those suggestions and questions aren't delivered in a helpful or empathetic tone, it's delievered with a "just pray and think more positively, that helps me!!" tone basically saying your struggle is lesser.

Part of her life changes that her doctors wanted are a few less hours, a specific time to write in files so she can leave on time more often, get better sleep, things like that.   She gets a bit of for those first two and they go largely ignored.   Then she is stressed, frazzled, and starts to lose sleep as a result.   Again, I don't think somebody who has a weight restristion, needs to sit down more, or other things like that would be met with that same resistance.  That is what I was I trying to get at before.

All that said - I can understand a bit from the other side too.   It's largely based on self-reporting, it's open for abuse, things like that.   People faking things for drugs are a thing.   People using it as an excuse for getting off work can be a thing.

But, I have witnessed multiple times my wife waking up bawling uncontrollably for 1hour plus, trying to call in, and being told to come into work (where she proceeds to retreat to the bathroom and cry throughout the day in between appointments).  I see it at my place of employment - a frustration, lack of understanding when people talk about needing some days off here or there due to this or calling in sick because of it that isn't seen if somebody had a flare up of IBS or some other "physical" disease.

You know the fastest growing segment of the population that's committing suicide? White men 50 and over.

I really don't blame them.

I am curious - is that attempts, or completed suicides?

I know they have some of the highest success rates because they are largely also who owns guns.

@listen2me 23 - Do you have children?

No but my GF is close to 2 months in.  So about to find out.

Found one that isn't on meds.  My last GF was a closet xanex abuser.  Among other mental pills she was on.  That is where I started learning about benzos.  My friend from HS is where I learned about pain medication in addition to recreationally taking it back then as well.  Thankfully never addicted and into rehab like him.  So I sort of have it out for this stuff.

Yep, what some call thickening up the skin, I call preferring rational discussion.

It's possible to talk about a rise is teen suicide without "OMG they are popping pills cutting themselves while trying to get attention and likes on Tik Tok!!"   Like I posted in the other thread - all it does is make rational people ignore the person, despite them having valid concerns and questions at the core.
