They had a cap out of shotgun shell loaded in them that would produce a large noise when the cap went off. They were used on stage and in fraternal orders to scare people going thru initiation.

Slapstick is the lowest form of comedy today.  It's why nobody except idiots is entertained by the 3 Stooges. "He got hit in the face with a pie! I can't stop laughing..."  Man were they starved for entertainment a 100 years ago.

However, one modern day comedian broke the mold and could actually pull off slapstick - the late Chris Farley.
