Majority of Californians believe Feinstein isn’t fit to serve, poll finds

....Nearly two-thirds of Californians believe Sen. Dianne Feinstein is no longer fit to serve in office due to her health condition, a new poll found....The respondents, which ranged across the ideological spectrum, cited the 89-year-old Feinstein’s latest illness as the reason she should resign, according to the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll, co-sponsored by The Los Angeles Times. T....Feinstein took several months away from her office earlier this year to recover....As a member of the Judiciary Committee, her absence caused a logjam on party-line judicial nominees....

....Though she has since returned to the hill, 52 percent of surveyed Democratic voters in California believe she should resign, according to the poll. If that happens, Gov. Gavin Newsom would be able to appoint a replacement to serve out the term. But voters aren’t sure who they would support in a Senate primary, the poll found. Republican attorney Eric Early has a slight lead with 18 percent of respondents — nearly all Republicans. Democrats aren’t far behind: Rep. Katie Porter polled at 17 percent, followed by Rep. Adam Schiff at 14 percent and Rep. Barbara Lee at 9 percent....

 Confused Feinstein says ‘I haven’t been gone. I’ve been working’ despite three-month absence

...Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Tuesday told reporters that she’s been at the Capitol working and voting, apparently unaware that she’s spent months away this year due to health problems...Feinstein, 89, returned to the Senate just last week after spending nearly three months away from Washington, DC,  recovering...When asked by a reporter Tuesday about the reception she’s received from colleagues upon her return, Feinstein lashed out at the journalist and provided answers indicating that she was seemingly unaware that she had been out.

“No, I haven’t been gone,” Feinstein said. “You should follow the — I haven’t been gone. I’ve been working.”

When asked if she meant that she’d been working from home, the senior senator from California responded, “No, I’ve been here. I’ve been voting. Please. You either know or don’t know.”

Feinstein, who was being maneuvered through the Senate in a wheelchair pushed by a staffer....Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate, has faced questions about her apparently declining cognitive abilities for years. ...In 2020, several people told the New Yorker that Feinstein’s short-term memory was so bad that she “often forgets she has been briefed on a topic, accusing her staff of failing to do so just after they have.” ....The publication also reported that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has had several “painful” conversations with Feinstein about stepping aside, only for her to soon forget the discussions had taken place....The report also indicated that her staff handles most of her responsibilities. 

Last month, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) called on Feinstein to resign amid absence from the Senate chamber.....“It’s time for [Feinstein] to resign,” Khanna said. “We need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty. While she has had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her duties. Not speaking out undermines our credibility as elected representatives of the people.”

Democrats erupt in laughter after Greene calls for decorum in House

.....Democrats erupted in laughter on the House floor Wednesday when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) — who was presiding over the chamber — called for decorum....The heckling came as House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) was delivering floor remarks about the debt ceiling, which has been the subject of high-stakes negotiations between GOP lawmakers and the White House....As Scalise was urging the Senate and White House to take action on raising the borrowing limit — referencing the bill House Republicans passed last month — Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) called him a liar....Bowman’s office confirmed to The Hill that it was the congressman who yelled “liar” while Scalise was speaking.

“Order,” Greene said from the dais, pounding her gavel.

“I ask that the House be in order and there be some decorum on the other side,” Scalise said.

After a roughly 15-second pause, Greene called for decorum in the chamber....“The members are reminded to abide by decorum of the House,” she said.

Democrats in the chamber then erupted in laughter. Some members — including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Cori Bush (D-Mo.) — stood from their seats and started shouting.

As the laughter continued, Greene slammed her gavel a number of times.

Sanders Leads Senate Call for DOD Probe Into Price-Gouging Military Contractors

....Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday led a group of senators in urging the Pentagon to investigate price gouging by military contractors after a CBS News probe that aired on "60 Minutes" earlier this week confirmed that private corporations are drastically overcharging the Defense Department for weaponry and other equipment, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in excess taxpayer spending and huge profits for the arms industry....

"As CBS reported, DOD's fixed price contracts would often provide for private profits of 12-15%," the letter continues. "Pentagon analysts found overcharges that boosted total profits to nearly 40% and sometimes as high as 4,000%. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, and TransDigm are among the offenders, dramatically overcharging the department and U.S. taxpayers while reaping enormous profits, seeing their stock prices soar, and handing out massive executive compensation packages."

....Republicans know more death enhances their power...Carl Schmitt was a German legal philosopher and political theorist, a critic of democracy and liberalism, and a rabid antisemite who served as the chief legal adviser to the Nazis and the Third Reich. ...For obvious reasons, Schmitt's theories about a state of exception, violence, totalitarianism, and nationalism were highly appealing for the Nazis and other such antidemocratic and illiberal movements and leaders.....The members of the right-wing brain trust that inhabit such places as the Federalist Society, the Claremont Institute, and the various other think tanks, research institutes and Koch-funded university departments and professorships who are doing the intellectual and legal work of undermining America's multiracial pluralist democracy most certainly also know Carl Schmitt...... It is almost certain that the average Republican voter, and other rank-and file-members of the MAGA movement do not know who Carl Schmitt is. But that does not matter because they are most certainly compelled to embrace Schmitt's arguments in favor of violence against some type of "enemy" such as Black and brown people, Muslims, the LGBTQ community, Democrats, liberals, progressives, and others deemed to not be "real Americans." 

Trump's greatest appeal is how he gives his followers.... permission to be their worst true horrible selves....Thus, the Republican fascists and larger white right and "conservative" movement have increasingly concluded that violence is a necessary and required (and legitimate) way for them to impose their will on the American people in the name of "defending traditional values" and "real America" (which is not subtle code for "White America" and "White Christianity")....Today's Republican Party and "conservative" movement and its forces want the American people to be sick and terminally ill with such violence and all the misery and death it causes. It is that sickness and death which the Republican fascists, the "conservatives" and the larger white right and their forces see as a pathway to unlimited power for all time and their dream-nightmare of a new American plutocracy.

Driver of U-Haul that rammed White House gate is not a U.S. citizen, prosecutors say

......Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, from suburban St. Louis, made his first court appearance after allegedly crashing into the barrier, then telling officials he.... wanted to "seize power.".....wore an orange jail-issued jumpsuit in his brief courtroom appearance — his first since the Monday incident — when prosecutors requested pre-trial detention. A government prosecutor told the court that Kandula is not a citizen....The defendant potentially faces multiple charges — including threatening to inflict harm on a president, vice president or family member — as the case moves forward....

.....Kandula is accused of renting a U-Haul truck at Dulles International Airport before he crashed into a barrier on the north side of the White House at about 9:35 p.m. ET on Monday.....A bystander took video that appeared to show the U-Haul's driver putting the 26-foot-long vehicle into reverse before jumping the curb and crashing again into barriers on the sidewalk....

Although President Joe Biden was in the White House during Monday's alleged attack, the administration has declined to say whether he was told about the crash as it was unfolding....

Why did Donald Trump’s candidacy appeal to so many women voters?...He received the strongest support from white women without college degrees, 62 percent of whom voted for him. Although his supporters reported median household incomes of $70,000, the Trump campaign tapped into fears and frustrations among white working-class women about diminished possibilities for their husbands and sons to provide for their families.....

The second largest contingent of women supporting Trump was white women with college degrees. Forty-five percent of them voted for him. ...In addition, although Clinton won the popular vote, exit polls suggested that more people cast their vote against her than against him. Those who found Trump unlikable but still voted for him numbered 20 percent of his supporters, while only 12 percent of those who said they disliked Clinton still voted for her. Seventy percent of white voters also described Clinton as dishonest or untrustworthy. This dynamic may also help explain why so many millennials who had supported Bernie Sanders didn’t vote this time around; they just couldn’t get over their dislike for Hillary.

Disney employees and former judge among 108 arrested in human trafficking sting, Florida police say

....Authorities have arrested 108 people, including alleged child sexual predators ...., in a six-day undercover human trafficking operation in Florida. Among those taken into custody were four Disney employees and a retired judge, police said. ..."The arrests of a human trafficker and four child predators alone makes this whole operation worthwhile," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday....

....Officials identified four Disney employees as among those arrested. Xavier Jackson, 27, worked as a lifeguard at the Polynesian Resort for Walt Disney. Judd said Jackson sent inappropriate photos of himself and messages to an undercover detective who pretended to be a 14-year-old girl.

....Authorities also arrested a man who worked at a local family amusement park in Orlando called The Fun Spot and a former Florida judge....Judd said Daniel Peters, 66, told detectives that he used to be a judge in the Cook County 4th Sub Circuit Court and a special assistant for legal affairs in the office of professional regulations at the Cook County Sheriff's Office in Illinois....

Hillary Clinton TV series about 'alternative universe' where she never marries Bill Clinton moves forward

....A television series about the life Hillary Clinton could have had is moving forward and has cast two major stars to play the high-profile Democrat. Variety reported Friday that actresses Claire Danes and Dakota Fanning will star as the older and younger versions of Clinton in the TV adaptation of the 2020 Curtis Sittenfeld novel "Rodham."  However, this isn't the typical biopic as Sittenfeld's story imagines an "alternative universe in which Hillary Rodham Clinton met and dated Bill Clinton at Yale Law School, but never married him."

.....The book still depicts her launching a 2016 presidential campaign....and the political rise of Donald Trump also take place in this alternative timeline, according to Variety....

Critics quickly panned the "Hillary Clinton fan fiction" on social media.  "Good grief," Tablet Magazine's Noam Blum reacted. "Is this real?" New York Democrat Lindsey Boylan asked.  "Who possibly wants to watch this? This is like the most boring alternative reality idea ever," journalist Jon Walker tweeted. "Let me guess: She gets elected president. I love science fiction!" Susan Rice Was a Diplomatic Disaster

....Susan Rice, then the Obama administration’s ambassador to the United Nations, flew to Addis Ababa to deliver a eulogy. “Prime Minister Meles was an uncommon leader, a rare visionary, and a true friend to me and many,” she said. While briefly allowing that the two could disagree on issues of democracy and human rights, she showered the deceased strongman with praise. He was, she said, “uncommonly wise,” “brilliant” and “selfless.”

....Until Benghazi, Rice’s record in Africa was probably best known for a remark she reportedly made in the early days of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, as the Clinton administration dawdled over its response. “If we use the word ‘genocide’ and are seen as doing nothing, what will be the effect on the November [congressional] election?” she asked during an interagency teleconference, according to an account by Samantha Power....

Rice was later named assistant secretary of state for African affairs during Bill Clinton’s second term, and became a champion for a new group of African leaders then seen as dynamic, democratic and reform-minded: Ethiopia’s Meles, Eritrea’s Isaias Afwerki, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni.....“What is publicly known,” according to a judicious 2002 analysis by Peter Rosenblum, “is that Rice announced the terms of a plan agreed to by Ethiopia, suggesting that Eritrea would have to accept it, before Isaias had given his approval. He responded angrily, rejecting the plan and heaping abuse on Rice. Soon afterward, Ethiopia bombed the capital of Eritrea, and Eritrea dropped cluster bombs on Ethiopia.”

....Nearly 100,000 people were killed in the war that followed. But that wasn’t the biggest debacle. Starting in 1998, several million people died in what came to be known as the second Congo war. It began when Rwanda and Uganda invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo, partly to clear out Hutu refugees and militia who had been behind the 1994 genocide, and partly to gain control of Congo’s vast mineral wealth. In Congressional testimony, Rice strenuously denied that the United States had encouraged the invasion....

.....There is reason to be skeptical. The former New York Times correspondent Howard French, who covered West and Central Africa, noted that Rice seems to have taken the view that the best U.S. policy was to “look the other way” as Rwanda and Uganda went to war. Rice later consulted for Kagame’s government when she was out of office, and gave him diplomatic cover when she was at the United Nations. “After delaying for weeks the publication of a United Nations report denouncing Rwanda’s support for the [Rwandan-backed rebel group] M23 and opposing any direct references to Rwanda in United Nations statements and resolutions on the crisis,” The Times’s Helene Cooper wrote in 2012, “Ms. Rice intervened to water down a Security Council resolution that strongly condemned the M23 for widespread rape, summary executions and recruitment of child soldiers.”

NYC Mayor Eric Adams Asks Court to Suspend Long-Standing ‘Right to Shelter' Policy

.....New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked a judge on Tuesday to let the city suspend its long-standing “right to shelter” obligation...The right to shelter has been in place for more than four decades in New York, after a court in 1981 required the city to provide temporary housing for every homeless person who asks for it. ....A city official said the Adams administration is looking to bring all involved parties back to the table and get more information on the rule.....The official told NBC New York said the city wants some guidance on what they can do going forward given space, staffing and financial constraints.....

....The proposal was condemned by some housing advocates, who said it could result in more people living outdoors. In a joint statement, the Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless blasted the city's idea. "The administration’s request to suspend the long-established State constitutional right that protects our clients from the elements is not who we are as a city. New Yorkers do not want to see anyone, including asylum seekers, relegated to the streets," the statement read. "We will vigorously oppose any motion from this Administration that seeks to undo these fundamental protections that have long defined our city."

....Catherine Trapani, executive director of Homeless Services United, a nonprofit that advocates for affordable housing, urged the city to alleviate the shelter crisis by increasing rental assistance programs.....“There are alternatives,” she said. “The mayor does not need to take this drastic step to limit what should be a fundamental right.....It's beyond disturbing that so much effort is being spent on rolling back protections for all New Yorkers, instead of implementing immediate and long-term solutions that can help us avoid and move out of shelters"

It has also put cots in schools, and temporarily housed people in tents, a cruise ship terminal and a former police academy building.....Adams has sought financial help from the state and federal government and has been critical of President Joe Biden’s administration for not providing funding to care for migrants. In an appearance on the CBS News program “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Adams said the White House offer of $30 million is insufficient.....

.....Congressmen Dan Goldman and Jamaal Bowman, who represent parts of the New York City area, have sent a letter to the heads of public Universities asking them to take care of migrants....This includes providing them with housing on campus and providing them with free food, free legal services, and free medical care. The letter went to the heads of the State University of New York [SUNY], City University of New York [CUNY], New York University [NYU], and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities...

....Goldman and Bowman also implored the city’s higher education institutions to help provide free legal services and food assistance to the new arrivals. “During the summer, many of your institutions have empty dorm rooms, student apartments, and other potentially appropriate places for shelter that can serve as much-needed temporary housing for migrants,” the lawmakers said in a statement. “We also ask for your help as we work with local leaders to provide food assistance and other necessities as well as pro bono legal assistance to migrant families arriving in New York.” 

Additionally, the pair requested schools develop programs that would allow their students to assist migrants on a voluntary basis. “Many of your institutions also have prestigious law schools, medical facilities, and admit students who are committed to public service,” they wrote in the letter. “We encourage you to develop programs that incentivize and support faculty and students to volunteer their time and talent to serve asylum seekers and their children.”

But as long as it's not in his district, doesn't cost him any money and doesn't interfere with voters in his district, he's OK with it. 

Bowman also pushed the open lie that widespread student loan forgiveness was coming, to try to entice young voters, while full well knowing that nothing of the sort would pass any kind of real judicial scrutiny. So Bowman does his part to lie to college students, then demand they operate as "free labor" for him, to drag out potential problems with migrants from his own district.

DHS funded college program linking Fox News, NRA, RNC to neo-Nazis

.....The Department of Homeland Security doled out more than $350,000 to a university program that placed the Republican Party and mainstream conservative groups on a “pyramid of far-right radicalization” alongside militant neo-Nazis......DHS’ Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant Program gave $352,109 in fiscal year 2022 to a University of Dayton project as part of an effort to “develop and implement modules on the risks of and protective factors for radicalization to violence related to media literacy and online critical thinking for students.”

.....Dayton received the grant after a seminar held at the Ohio university’s Human Rights Center tied groups such as the Republican National Committee, the Heritage Foundation, the National Rifle Association, and Fox News to known hate organizations including the neo-Nazi paramilitary group The Base and the white supremacist website The Daily Stormer....Under President Biden, DHS has awarded 80 grants totaling almost $40 million in taxpayer funding to target forms of domestic extremism.....The Media Research Center also obtained an internal memo that shows Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has designated the program a “high priority” of the Biden administration.

“This terrorism task force is engaged in an active effort to demonize and eliminate Christian, conservative, and Republican organizations using federal taxpayer dollars.... The American people need to know those who are abusing their positions in the federal government will be held accountable for their criminal behavior.....The Biden Administration has weaponized the government to silence and intimidate conservative voices along with Americans who disagree with the Left’s radical ideology. ...The National Rifle Association blasted the Biden administration for what it called an “outrageous misuse of public funds,” adding: “Protecting [the Second Amendment] isn’t terrorism, it’s patriotism.....There was also no mention about the extremism of a President abusing his power to try and force a nation to take an experimental drug without consent, or the fact that a substantial portion of the country supported punishing those who wouldn’t comply,....Whether it’s the FBI, DOJ, IRS, or DHS, it seems the Biden admin will weaponize any part of the federal government against its political opponents, including by conflating them with terrorist....”
