Someone told me buyout clauses for college coaches were becoming less popular than in years past. But Kirby Smart signed his deal in Jan 2022 with a $90 million buyout, so perhaps my friend is in idiot.

I get why proven coaches like Saban, Smart, Swinney, etc. get those deals. What I can't understand is why my idiot Florida Gators would give a buy-out deal to a no-name loser from Louisiana.?.  He should be happy just to get offered a job.

Michigan State got lucky that they could back out of Mel Tucker's Jimboesque guaranteed mega-contract, not because of mediocre results which they could not have, but because of seemingly specious sexual harassment allegations.

The football program is in serious trouble of becoming irrelevant but at least they found a loophole to save a large chunk of money that was unavailable to Texas A&M.

My opinion?  Biggest reason they went that route.  Mel was NOT a good coach.  MSU knew it.  I wouldn't be surprised at all that some booster got to his accuser, put some $$ in some secret account, in exchange for her coming forward with what clearly was a mutual thing between them.
