Mike Honcho 5,270 Posted December 14, 2023 Co-worker called in yesterday saying he was having trouble breathing. Goes to the hospital and he had a collapsed lung. He went to bed normally and just woke up with a collapsed lung. Apparently, this just happens this time of year, with air pressure changes. Friggin crazy, I've never heard of anything like this before.
HellToupee 1,775 Posted December 14, 2023 Wow never heard of this before. The guy must’ve been in agony getting up.Barometric pressure changes is a cause of headaches/migraines for me. They put a tube in his chest and it sucks out the air and stuff and the pressure differential cause the lung to fill in that area. He was on pain meds and I could tell it was extremely painful! The people who are more susceptible to this are tall / thin people & smokers... assuming he didn't get hurt, have lung cancer, or went scuba diving recently. In general, though he fits none of those groups. Really a crazy strange occurrence.

Friggin crazy, I've never heard of anything like this before. I’ve heard of it happening. Very rare but it can happen. Glad they were able to make it to the hospital in time. Job I just took is working with NICU babies so I manage the transport unit that handles them. Have had a few pneumothoraxes (air in chest cavity in layman’s terms) in the babies the last few weeks but RSV has been HORRIBLE this year so I’ve been busy ever since I took over. I LOVE the job working with the neonatal babies. Didn’t plan on working with NICU when I was in school but ever since accepting this position I don’t see me doing anything else but trying to help babies survive into childhood 🥺

It happened to my son when he was 4, but he was really sick at the time, so it wasn't completely unexpected. Very scary when it happens.

Even with my training, seeing it happen to a small kid still freaks me out/upsets me cause they’re so small & innocent you HATE seeing them go through something so traumatic. It’s why I decided to just stay working with kids in the hospital cause I fully believe every child should be able to grow up & go to their HS prom among other things
