1/1/1984

Recommended Posts

The date is January 1, 1984, and it's a Sunday. Anyone born today will have the star sign Capricorn. It's New Year's Day, the official start of the year 1984. A lot of people are relaxing at home. Some are nursing hangovers from the night before.

In America, the song "Say Say Say" by Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson is at the top of the singles charts, while "Only You" by Flying Pickets is the number-one song in the UK. Ronald Reagan is the President of the United States, and the movie Terms of Endearment is at the top of the box office. Margaret Thatcher is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

On television, people are watching popular shows such as "Three's Company", "Knots Landing", "Cagney & Lacey", and "'Allo 'Allo!". In fashion, women are wearing long sweaters, fishnet stockings, fingerless gloves, jumpsuits, over-sized scarves, miniskirts, stirrup pants, and spandex cycling shorts. Meanwhile, men are wearing Hawaiian shirts, flannel, shell suits, and wool sport coats. Because it's 1984, the radio stations are being dominated by artists such as George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Wham!, Cyndi Lauper and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

If you were to travel back to this day, notable figures such as Marvin Gaye, Andy Kaufman, Truman Capote, and Kiki Camarena would all still be alive. People are playing video games such as "Space Invaders", "Lunar Lander", "Galaxian", and "Mario Bros.". Kids and teenagers are watching TV shows such as "Diff'rent Strokes", "The Smurfs", "The Littles", and "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero".

Children are playing with toys such as the Easy-Bake Oven, Lite-Brite, Screwball Scramble, and Space Lego.
