Michigan Northern Lights.

I've never seen the northern lights before but they made it far enough south to view with the naked eye.

While very cool to see it was really a faint green/purple. Honestly if you weren't looking you probably wouldn't have noticed it. 

On the other hand. When you used your phone to take a picture or video they looked amazing. Which of course is what everyone is posting. 

The cynic in me can't help to think how fake everything is.

The human eye has a pretty narrow spectrum at which its sensitivity peaks.   We are most sensitive around the 550nm region (green) and tails off severely as it gets closer to the 650nm (red) and 450nm (blue).  The image sensor of a camera has a wider spectrum which it is sensitive to light and is far better at picking up the deep reds and the violent and beyond.   Cameras tend to try to reproduce what the eyes sees by applying filters and electronic manipulation, but they still tend to show a wider spectrum and more vivid colors than what the eyes see.

In the 1859 solar storm event people saw the aurora as far south as Hawaii and Columbia. I think it was unmistakable. NOAA registered this one in the highest level of severity at times, so I also wonder why it took using night mode to see it like this. I could see hazy relative brightness with my naked eye and a hint of hue.

this is the second time i have seen them. The first was much different and you could see them with the naked eye. These looked more like a sailors sky until you looked at it through your phone. I got some amazing shots from lower Michigan

If you can see them as far as Alabama, don't they stop being Northern lights?
