Trump threatens Nigeria with potential military action

>>ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — U.S. PresidentĀ Donald TrumpĀ on Saturday said he’s ordered the Pentagon to begin planning for potential military action in Nigeria as he stepped up his allegations that the government is failing to rein inĀ the persecution of ChristiansĀ in the West African country.

The president also warned that he ā€œwill immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria.ā€

ā€œIf the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ā€˜guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,ā€ Trump posted on social media. ā€œI am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians!ā€

The warning came after Nigeria’s PresidentĀ Bola Ahmed TinubuĀ earlier on Saturday pushed back on Trump announcing a day earlier that he was designating the West African country ā€œa country of particular concernā€ for allegedly failing to rein in theĀ persecution of Christians.

In a social media statement on Saturday, Tinubu said that the characterization of Nigeria as a religiously intolerant country does not reflect the national reality.

ā€œReligious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so,ā€ Tinubu said. ā€œNigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it. Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths.ā€ …<<

Strawman. The US should use power and influence to protect those that can’t protect themselves.Ā

Wait...didn't Trump run on anĀ "America First" foreign policy platform during his presidential campaign,Ā withĀ the assertion that the US could no longer afford to be theĀ "world's policeman"?Ā

We’ve done plenty in Ukraine and they can defend themselves. Gaza elected the terrorists. Ā Saudi and Yemen are in cease fire. US strength should be used to intervene when those can’t help themselves.Ā

You really can’t separate your TDS from a situation in which the US has the opportunity and, I would say, responsibility to do good. Ā Sad.Ā

We’ve done plenty in Nigeria & they’re the largest democracy in Africa.

Nigeria elected its government.

Yemen is in civil warĀ & Houthis attack international shipping & attack innocent civilians constantly.Ā

I *completely agree with your last point, it has zero to do with Trump & maga.

And you completely ignored the point about USAID. And Syria, where Trump withdrew troops unilaterally, they were explicitly protecting Syrian Christians.

Innocents are killed around the world all the time, with anĀ opportunity and responsilility for the US to do good.

So why does Trump focus on just this country? What makes it different...could it be the oil and minerals?Ā

These people need help. If it helps the IS strategically, even better. Why do you need to make this about Trump?

Well gee, good for the US and good for the slaughter of innocents. So you don’t like the way he said it?

Edited to add….

I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you actually care about people beingĀ slaughtered based solely on their religious beliefs.Ā

I don't like that he said it at all.

As I noted earlier, he campaigned on the assertion thatĀ US could no longer afford to be theĀ "world's policeman," but that is exactly what he wants to do here.Ā

The MAGA folks always say "That's what I voted for!" but I doubt they had in mind an invasion and occupation of Nigeria.Ā

I am curious to see the reaction of Republicans and those on the right in the coming days.Ā

We just pulled troops out of Niger. (Thats a different country FYI). In fact the Russians took over our expensive new military base. Same thing is going on there. You’ll never guess what Nigeria has but Niger doesn’t.

The US has killed 61 people using the military against foreign flagged ships in international waters, providing no evidence of drug trafficking or other illegal action.

TheseĀ appear to be senseless killings since Trump has offered no proof of the crimes these civilians have supposedly committed.

The illegal killing of people with zero demonstrated reason or basis would mean the US is doing the thing we should intervene to stop.

Nigeria rejects US military threat over alleged Christian killings

ABUJA, Nigeria — The U.S. cannot unilaterally carry out any military operation in Nigeria over its claims of Christian persecution in the West African country, a Nigerian presidential spokesman told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The military threat from Donald TrumpĀ is based on misleading reports and appears to be part of ā€œTrump’s style of going forceful in order to force a sit-down and have a conversation,ā€ according to Daniel Bwala, a spokesman for Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

[...]

The Associated Press foundĀ that both Christians and Muslims are killed in Nigeria’s security crises, and that victims are often determined by their locations and not due to their religion.

Nigeria denies Christians are persecuted:Ā Cruz and Trump relied on old reports from more than a decade ago when Nigeria’s home-grown Boko Haram Islamic group launched an insurgency to enforce their brutal interpretation of Shariah law, said Bwala.

ā€œWhen it comes to matters of military operation in Nigeria, this is a matter that two leaders have to agree on. It is not something unilaterally you can do especially since that country is a sovereign state and that country is not aiding and abating that (crime),ā€ he said.
