Hook and Ladder

Recommended Posts

Quote
During the Lions vs 49ers game on Monday night, the Lions executed a hook and ladder play. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught the initial pass from Jared Goff and then lateraled the ball to Jameson Williams who scored a touchdown. On this play, St. Brown is credited with a reception and 1 receiving yard and Williams is credited with 41 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. For leagues that use the 40+ yard TD reception bonus, managers who started Williams will earn that bonus.

I don't ever remember seeing this before.

Just curios how other leagues may have scored this play...

honestly if its a lateral, williams should not be getting credit for a catch.   Technically thats a run.   yardage and TD should be all he gets for scoring.

it is interesting seeing some of these plays coming from the CFL playbook and making their way into the NFL.   Fun play to watch.

This has come up several times this season - most notably when Josh Allen completed a pass an then received a lateral to score a TD.  If the play includes a forward pass all TDs and yards gained go down as both passing and receiving yards (but there is only one completion and one reception).  So, it is possible for a player to have no receptions but still have a receiving yards/TDs.  If there is an actual fumble, receiving/passing yards stop and yards/TDs become part of the fumble recovery/return.

In your example, there may need to be a distinction made between TD reception and receiving TD/yards - it seems appropriate that Williams would get credit for 40+ yard receiving TD (even though he didn't have a reception).  If the Amon Ra had caught a 41 yard bomb and then lateraled to Williams who went 1 yard for the TD, the QB stats would be exactly the same but no receiver would have a 40+yard receiving TD.

It’s hook and lateral. There is no ladder involved.
