The Trump admin sent a memo to USAID employees today threatening to fire them if they communicated with the press about continued disruptions to foreign aid

The directive ordering USAID employees to refrain from discussing this with the press represents an unnerving turn in this saga, given how ugly and blatant it is. “This is basically telling USAID personnel not to tell the truth about what they have seen,” Jeremy Konyndyk, a former senior USAID official, told me, adding that this functionally commands USAID staff to “get in line with the propaganda narrative.”

You do realize most federal employees are not allowed to talk to the media about job related activities.   During the Biden years there was a big push to protect what they call Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) which basically treated every bit of government business related information about every part of government operations as if it were classified.

Used to not a big deal.  But the last few years leaving out CUI exposed is strictly forbidden and is supposed to be kept in a locked drawer.  Government audits have been conducted on organisation's on how employees handle CUI, requirements for markings have been widely implemented and annual training requirements have been imposed.  There are employees authorized to talk to the media, but that is why I said 'most'.  The average federal employee woudd be disciplined and potentially fired for disclosing business related activities to the public.

Would not surprise me one bit if that was the motivation for the government to start to emphasize CUI the last few years.  They wanted hooks in the regulations to attack whistleblowers who go public.  They could effectively keep things quiet if the process of whistleblowing was kept completely internal.  I found it bizarre how much effort the government has put into protecting CUI in recent years.
