Circuit court puts final nail in the coffin for Biden's $500M student loan forgiveness plan

That makes sense.  I find it ironic though.  The government and school will give an 18 year old a hundred thousand dollars to go to school and trust they'll pay it back, yet, they don't trust that same 18 year old with said hundred thousand dollars in hand.

I wouldn't trust an 18 year old with 100k in hand. I might have ended up using the $$ to make my first semester tuition payment, then invested the rest in the market

The most logical thing to do, and safest for the student and family, is to send that loan directly to the school to cover tuition and related expenses first. If you're living on campus with a meal plan, that's all part of it. Possibly books as well? Although I recall still having to buy my books and normally If I had a close friend or someone I lived with in the same class or taking the same class, we just split one or if their parents bought all their books they usually didn't care and let me just borrow it when needed.  I didn't even do work study programs or have a job while I was at school. I worked on my summer breaks and I was pretty good managing my money so I was able to pay off my student loans pretty quickly after graduating.

Im pretty sure the federal student loans go directly to the schools and the only way you're going to see any of it for use on living expenses is if there is excess after.

Certainly didn't used to be that way.   I knew multiple guys back in the day that would walk into the Student Aid office in the morning, fill out the paperwork, and have a check ready for them to take to the bank in the afternoon.   old GSL program.    Check was made out in the name of the student and colleges were in the processing seat, no bank involved in the loan.

Some of these guys cashed $x,000 checks and headed for the bars same week they got the $.    🤣
