Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has said in the past that he wants to be a member of the Toronto Blue Jays for life. But after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension prior to the first baseman's deadline on Monday, his future with the franchise is uncertain.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, the 25-year-old Guerrero said he last spoke with the team at 10:30 p.m. ET Monday, and the Blue Jays were not close to offering what he was looking for.

"They had their numbers. I had my numbers," Guerrero said through interpreter Hector Lebro.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said the offers the team made to Guerrero were "record-setting." When asked to clarify, Atkins said, “Blue Jays records. And would have been one of the highest paid players in the game."

Guerrero, a four-time All-Star who hit 30 home runs and drove in 103 runs last season, does not plan to negotiate during the season and is currently scheduled to become a free agent in November.

"I'm here. We didn't get an agreement," he said. "Now they're going to have to compete with 29 other teams."

Guerrero is entering his seventh season with the Blue Jays. He has a career .288 batting average. He hit at least 30 home runs in three of the past four seasons and drove in at least 90 runs in each season since 2021. After Toronto pursued big-name free agents such as Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Roki Sasaki and Pete Alonso only to fall short, losing a franchise piece such as Guerrero — and potentially shortstop Bo Bichette after the 2025 season — would be a crushing blow.

Guerrero reiterated Tuesday that he wants to remain in Toronto, saying, "I will do anything, everything I can to stay here because I want to be here." But winning is also important to the two-time All-MLB first-teamer. While the Blue Jays have made the playoffs three times since Guerrero entered the big leagues, they've yet to win a postseason game, losing all three wild-card series via 2-0 sweeps.

Freeman is getting old anyway. Time for Dodgers to upgrade

Does he expect more than Soto?

I would assume. Isn't that how it works? The next guy wants the most? I personally don't think he will get it. He will get close I bet.

Where does it end?

My guess at what Guerrero is asking for, is nuts.  I think that a team that gives him the number he's asking for, is even more nuts.

Soto got $51M per year.  Outfielders get that kind of cash, especially when they have 9 years with an OPS+ of 160 and is still in his prime.  Guerrero is a 1B, and 1B's don't get that kind of cash.  Also, let's be fair at what he is... he's had 2 (out of 6), seasons where he's a 160+ OPS+ (the other 4 are 133, 116, 115, & 106).  He's had a 4.0 WAR (or less), in 4 of 6 seasons.  Yes, he's about to really hit his stride, but what are you going to get going forward?  :dunno:  Over the next 8 seasons, my guess is that I'd get 4 seasons of 6+ WAR and 4 seasons of sub 4 WAR.  If you go by the average of $8M per WAR for free agents and assume that Guerrero averages 5 WAR per year, that's $40M.  With that, I'd give him, as a 1B is a 8 year $320M deal.  I'm willing to bet that the Blue Jays offered more than that and he turned it down.

Guerrero, outside of his 2 big years, has an OPS of .798... Bryan Reynolds has a career OPS of .821.  Vlad's average WAR for 162 games is 4.3... Bryan Reynolds is 4.0.

I think baseball teams make enough money. Especially if they win.

Guerrero hits like his dad did.

Agreed.

You guys are really killing it thinking he's gonna make a lot of money.

What a take by you all.

He's not as good as his dad.  Through their first 6 seasons, Vlad Sr has better numbers across the board than Jr... it's not really even all that close.

Vladdy will not talk contract during the season...that is unless the Jays give him what he is asking..then they reached a deal. Deadlines don`t mean squat...the are artificial.

Let him play it out..his body type is made for a DH.

Like Fatty Devers   worst defensive 3rd baseman in the major leagues and he won’t go to DH to let a gold glover play 3rd 🙃
