Former Yankees player Brett Gardner and his family are dealing with a devastating loss after his 14-year-old son died while on vacation.

“With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation,” Brett, 41, and his wife, Jessica Gardner, wrote in a statement shared by the official Yankees social media account on Sunday, March 23. “We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”

The couple described Miller as a “beloved son and brother” who loved several sports like football, baseball and golf, and said that he “lived life to the fullest every day.”

“We are so thankful to all who have reached out to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time and we are confident our faith, family, and friends will help us navigate this unimaginable loss,” the statement continued. “Our prayers go out to Miller's teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child far too soon as we share their grief. Please respect our wishes for privacy as we mourn and search for healing.”

“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner. Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn't just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years – so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller,” the message posted via X read. “We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.”

The statement concluded by adding, “Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy at this time. May Miller rest in peace.”

Fans rushed to the comments to express their condolences.

“Today everyone in the baseball community is a Brett Gardner family fan, can't even imagine the pain of losing a child. Condolences,” one X user wrote.

Brett played for the Yankees his entire professional career, starting in 2008 before retiring in 2021. During his time with the team, he helped them take home their 27th World Series championship just one year after joining the team in 2009.

Does it say where this happened, or am I blind?

The couple did not detail where they were on vacation at the time of the incident, or the cause of death for their son.

No. I’ve been following this since yesterday and still no one has said where it occurred. RIP. Horrible. Gardner was a well liked player. Didn’t think he would ever be more than a platoon player but he stuck around for a good while and had success.

Costa Rica. Had a friend of mine go down there about ten years ago and picked up a bug.  Wound up in the hospital for a week.
