Hard-right Trump admirer Simion seeks victory in Romania presidential election

Recommended Posts

BUCHAREST, May 16 (Reuters) - Eurosceptic hard-right lawmaker George Simion could be elected Romania's president on Sunday, riding a wave of popular anger over living costs, corruption and the cancellation of a vote last year that another far-right contender had looked set to win.

Simion decisively swept the first round of the presidential election re-run on May 4 in a ballot that is seen as a test of the rise of Donald Trump-style nationalism in the European Union

Simion opposes military aid to Ukraine, is critical of the EU leadership and supportive of U.S. President Donald Trump. A win for Simion in Romania, an EU and NATO member, would risk isolating the country abroad, eroding private investment and destabilising NATO's eastern flank, political analysts say.

He is campaigning on a "Romania first" ticket, advocating conservative policies and stoking voter anger over high living costs and perceived social immorality that he blames on mainstream centre-left and centre-right politicians and Western elites.

We'll see. The last time Romania tried to elect a president who wasn't a puppet or Brussels, the corporate globalist EU elites sh@t on their choice and overrode/nullified the election results. Hopefully Romanian voters tell them to go fock off a second time.

There's some good momentum happening.  Let's hope it sticks

Romania has voted for democracy & the EU. Simion has lost.

Has Simion declared victory and called the election rigged yet?

  • Thanks 1

The playbook seems to be blocking candidates in Europe from running . Happened in France with Le Pen and now in Romania with Calin Georgescu. It didn’t work here in the US

No doubt it's coming, that's the nationalist-populist M.O.

Now do Al Gore!!!

I'm glad to, I still think the USSC handled that decision properly. If Simion wants to avail himself of constitutional options in Romania he should go right ahead, but he lost by ~5% off the vote not ~500 votes like Gore.

IMO Gore handled the situation admirably and bowed out at the right time.
