U.S. Military and boat strikes thread - Was The Follow-Up Boat Strike a War Crime?

Recommended Posts

That idiot Mark Kelly out there spewing lies. He ought to be brought in front of a tribunal and stripped of rank and thrown in the Brig.

That's all very subjective, you should know that.

We have ongoing military operations within the borders of probably 20 countries right now that you have no idea about.

This should not surprise anyone.

We just struck Somalia. No one here or really much of America cares, but of course. There’s a report that just came out that we tried to implant eavesdropping on Kim Jong Un, & Koreans were killed….. etc. But every operation stems from an agency and/or military unit, and they all have lawyers & IGs, whom btw Trump has been firing as fast as they pop up. Yes even covert ops have legal justifications & memos, or at least they have since the Church Commission. At any rate, we’re talking war here, which isn’t some grey/black situation.

There will be an internal investigation within the Department. There always is in these situations.

Free from Trump or Hegseth.

Just so you know how this works.

Thank you, I agree. However iirc Trump/SOD fired the prior DOD lawyers & IG who were reviewing war planning. And also Iirc there’s already a legal memo about all this. And - Iirc - Chief of Southern Command resigned when all this was happening, which is a hell of a thing.

Lawmakers Suggest Follow-Up Boat Strike Could Be a War Crime

A top Republican and Democrats in Congress suggested on Sunday that American military officials might have committed a war crime in President Trump’s offensive against boats in the Caribbean after a news report said that during one such attack, a follow-up strike was ordered to kill survivors.

The remarks came in response to a Washington Post report on Friday that said that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had given a verbal order to kill everyone aboard boats suspected of smuggling drugs, and that this led a military commander to carry out a second strike to kill those who had initially survived an attack in early September.

“Obviously if that occurred, that would be very serious, and I agree that that would be an illegal act,” Representative Mike Turner, Republican of Ohio and a former chairman of the Intelligence Committee, said on “Face the Nation” on CBS.

Senator Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, said on CBS that if the report was accurate, the attack “rises to the level of a war crime.” And on CNN, when asked if he believed a second strike to kill survivors constituted a war crime, Senator Mark Kelly, Democrat of Arizona, answered, “It seems to.”

You'll notice the carefully hedged language being used here. Lots of "ifs" and "woulds" as opposed to "did's" and "are's"

This is how well-measured, balanced responses are worded. Then compare it to everything DJT says, which is typically worded in untrue absolutes, with no reference or deference to investigation, enforcement, or legality.

The Don is unfit. I look forward to the impeachment proceedings.

I get it, there were so many. Some of them were even reported.  You must have missed it, didn’t matter then.

I’m just asking for clarification. Glad to help.

The Obama administration did rely on a legal memo in the Awlaki strike.

Listen Walz, I didn’t mention Obama. You can go now. You clearly cannot converse.

Ok so you raised something & you can’t recall what specific event it was. It’s not a problem.

I assume he’s referring to this, which we admitted was a mistake then helped relocate the surviving victims to the US:

Thank you.

1. There was a Defense Dept IG report.

2. There were 2 Congressional authorizations behind military action (Afghanistan & GWOT).

3. The commander apologized.

4. The US paid compensation.

5. The SecDef ordered a review & corrections in policy.

Instead of doing any of this (heh, dozen strikes, almost a hundred dead now, multiple countries affected) Hegseth said ‘Hell yes I ordered the code red.’

The meeting, which is expected to take place at 5 p.m. ET in the Oval Office, comes as the United States has increased pressure on Venezuela with strikes on drug vessels and a military asset buildup in the Caribbean. The US military has amassed more than a dozen warships and 15,000 troops in the region as part of what the Pentagon has branded “Operation Southern Spear.”

You know it's serious if DTJ is willing to work late.
