Only Indians have a chance at that thing anymore. American kids don't care. Its funny though, how can a group of people that cant get "w" and "v" right when talking and can barely speak the language can do so well in a spelling bee.

As an ESL teacher, and Chinese learner, I can explain that.

Making sounds is all about muscle memory. That is why small children have funny sounds sometimes.

There are certain sounds that don't exist in certain languages. So when those people learn English, they struggle with those sounds.

You can pronounce "L" an "R" and "W" and "v" because you have a lifetime of muscle memory and practice. They don't.

There are sounds in Chinese that I just cannot make. No matter how hard I try. I can get close enough to be understood, but it isn't right.

My girlfriend laughs at my "American accent" all the time. I tell her "you do realize that you have a heavy accent in English too, right?"

The funny thing is how living abroad corrupts your English. You get used to mispronouncing things on purpose so that people can understand you.

For example, it is not a KT-Vee, it is a KTWE... WE-IP, not VIP.

I speak some weird ass amalgamation of Chinglish most of the time. It kind of fucks with your brain. I'm sure when I am at home this summer. I will constantly answer people in Chinese if I'm not paying attention. Things like "dui instead of yes" "hao de instead of ok" and "ni hao instead of hello" have just become habit. I'm sure after a week that will revert to normal though.

But for the spelling bee? Spelling is simple phonics and memorization. And there is nobody that can out memorize an Asian. White people are better culturally at creative thought and logical reasoning. But Asian people will out work us most of the time.

Walk into a rim shop and when they ask you what you want to buy, point and say nega
