That being said, one of the things that always bugs me about people judging women who are staying in abusive relationships is the sense that they're either really foolish/have self-respect issues/etc. Those reasons are probably valid a lot of the time. But also, a lot of the time, people stay out of fear of reckoning with what the volatile party does when you actually leave for real. It's not about liking abuse, it might be about trying to avoid being stabbed to death. There's definitely not a one-size-fits-all reason. And there's plenty of stories of people being killed after leaving, like they feared.

 

In this woman's case she defended him pretty aggressively in court so I doubt that was her thinking. If you should have LE support, things are out in the open now, etc., that's the time to split, and she didn't want to.
