IGotWorms 4,063 Posted June 17, 2007 Interesting article there. To me, what it comes down to, is that line "you don't probably don't even hear it when it happens." Couple that with the abrupt silence at the end of the episode, and its obvious that the intention was to symbolize death. The question is, are we talking about the death of the show, the death of Tony, or both?

Guest tiki_gods Posted June 17, 2007 VINDICATED! There was a lot more in that last scene than I originally thought. I had no idea about the oranges...the last supper setting...the gun in the sleeve of the Member's Only guy.
Snoopy1 0 Posted June 17, 2007 Tony's is most assuredly 100% dead...until of course someone offers David Chase a dump truck full of money to make a movie, then he won't be so dead.

football_scooter 0 Posted June 17, 2007 Best thing I've read on the subject. Interesting stuff. The last supper screen cap is downright eerie, as well as the big orange cat. I caught the onion rings as communion before, but didn't catch the opening scene where it looks like Tony's in a coffin, the orange, and many many other things. I was in the "audience got whacked - Tony's fine" camp. This convinced me otherwise without a dobt.

IGotWorms 4,063 Posted June 17, 2007 Upon further review: 1. The opening shot of the episode definitely invokes Tony lying in a coffin. 2. The first shot of Tony sitting by himself in the restaurant is definitely a nod to The Last Supper, and the orange tiger is quite prominent. 3. The onion-rings-as-communal-wafer thing, while sounding whacky, appears to have quite a bit of creedence. Tony, AJ, and Carm are all shown, with successive individual shots, putting the onion rings in their mouths in the exact same manner, as one would with a communal wafer. I think there is definitely something to this theory that the last scene, perhaps even the whole episode, was a funeral of sorts for Tony Soprano.
Walter34 3 Posted June 17, 2007 There is certainly enough evidence to support Tony being dead. This was the intent, to do so only for the hardcore fans that will bother to over analyze the whole thing. 90% of America are oblivious to the imagery and analysis and will readily accept a movie or followup show / season should the creators choose to do so. Its win / win for Chase where he has the closure the public demands and leaves the door unlocked if he wants to re-open it. Chase can even satiate the hardcore fans should he have a followup by saying that the images and symbolism were a figurative death or a death of the show or the death of the fans view into T's life or ... etc, etc

But the bit about Meadow not taking communion because she was pregnant also made sense. It could still all be a figurative death, with the Sopranos still alive, but I suspect that both AJ and Tony Soprano are dead. Regardless, I have to say it's a tremendously thought provoking episode for the very fact that it is a puzzle to be put together, and in that I believe it's a tremendoud success for that. I love that the season is continuing in my mind because I'm stimulated enough by the episode to want to put it together. My hat goes off to Chase on this one. Regardless that some can't be bothered to use their brains and need everything to be spoon fed to them in a nice tidy package with a ribbon on it, I think this was a perfect ending. Chase is brilliant. The more I read into this the more I'm happy with the ending. Every time I hear "Don't Stop Believing" I'll always think of that diner scene now. football_scooter 0 Posted June 18, 2007 There isn't a SF Bay Area native (or long time resident) who doesn't have a special place in their hearts for "Lights". Open Arms and Wheel in the Sky are cool too, but my favorite Journey song might be Seperate Ways. Oh, and the video was "awesome" - them playing in front of a warehouse with cameras rolling by them indivudually & togher. lol Yes, I like Journey. I'm not ashamed to admit it.
