ideas for sixteen teams

Recommended Posts

1) two divisions of eight, play 14 regular season games with a double round robin within your division, hence like two mini-leagues until the playoffs start, that allows two weeks for the playoffs or three if we have the super bowl game week 17

2) four divisons of four, play 14 regular season games, double round robin within division (six games) and play all the teams from two of the other three divisions, that allows two weeks for the playoffs or three if we have the super bowl game week 17

3) four divisons of four, play 13 regular season games, double round robin within division (six games) and then play 7 of the remaining 12 teams, that allows three weeks for the playoffs

4) no divisions, play a single round robin against all other 15 teams and then have just week 16 (or maybe 17 too) for a brief playoff

5) some sort of attempt at playing every team at least once via double-header weeks during the non-NFL-bye weeks, for instance:

> double headers week 1, 2, 11, 12, 13

> single games weeks 3-10

> that's a total of 18 games over 13 weeks

> play all twelve non-division teams once

> play the indivision team twice

> that's a total of 18 games

> play one non-division team weeks 1-12

> play the division opponents as the extra games weeks 1, 2, 11, 12 and play two of them week 13

Just checking to see if I can post here.

Also, I like #2. You can just rotate the division you don't play from year to year.

Right now I think everyone can post everywhere still. I have requested official access for you hoo, galt, and bernie, so we should be covered.

#5 would be another interesting twist to make the league unique. We'd have to research which site could support that one.

I'm partial to #2 as well, and since this is a dynasty league, what Wilzone said works fine. We can rotate the schedules like th NFL does, meaning you will eventually play every team, but just not all in one season.

That was my biggest concern with it. It's going to be hard enough getting the cheapskates here to agree on a site (since it will certianly be a pay site) that will accomodate our needs as a large dynasty league.

If we can find one though i'm not adverse to doubleheaders, we use them in one 12 team league to have a 16 game season and still have 2 rounds of playoffs.

RTSports would be no more than $5 per year (and maybe less if someone who already buys a league there can make the purchase). $5 * 16 = $80. I believe that MFL is less. Our rules are probably not so complex that any hosting service would work. There are a couple around $50 per season that would be around $3 per team, yet they might not support the double headers. I'm pretty sure that RTS does support them. IMO, we should decide what we want first, then start shopping for one that meets our needs.

How should we set the divisions?

1) geographic (we'd need city/state info for everyone)

2) use one of the four dice in the die rolls (pick one - the highest four are together and so forth)

3) try to keep the chimi geeks in different divisions and likewise for geeks in other leagues together (my chimi division is me + wilzone + grandpahoo, so at least split us up)

4) roll again (not the best choice)

5) form your own - find three others to play with you

6) by FFToday member number (the 1st, 5th, 9th, 13th highest are together and so forth)

7) some other idea(s) (specify)

...we should decide this as well as the rules before we start frafting.

I also like option #2 the best, along with the Wilzone suggestion of rotating the divisions each year as we go. I wouldn't be opposed to option #5, if we can find a site that can handle it.

As far as setting up the divisions, I like the idea of using our FFToday member numbers for determining who we are stuck with.

*edited to mention that I would gladly pay my share for a good site*

Member number sounds cool  , I was going to say use the draft order:

1-4

5-8

9-12

13-16

Member numbers is a better way of doing it though. I think the lowest 4 should be one division, then the next 4 and so on. We can call the first division Silverbacks, the next few Vets, Assmegs and rookies (or whatever you clever focks think of).

Site does not matter to me. We used Yahoo before because we were a bunch of cheap asses. It would still work, we would just have to get the rosters in some type of spreadsheet to carry over from year to year.

This league is filled with oldheads. I've been at FFToday for almost 3 years and I am in the Rookie group. Pretty weird.

Does everybody realize that #2 means that either A. we only have four playoff teams (no wildcards, just the four division winners), or B. we have six or eight playoff teams but have to run the championship game week seventeen?

Hmm. Both A and B suck hard in their own way.

I really wouldn't mind option 5. My local league plays double header games, and it sure makes the standings interesting.

I kind of like the idea of only 4 division winners in the playoffs.

The NFL has sixteen teams per conference and six playoff teams per conference. I would think it somewhat desirable to copy-cat them. :wall:

So we should have cheerleaders too?

I'm kind of in Wilzone's corner here, the idea of having to win your division, old school MLB style is appealing to me.

I would go with option 5 if that is what other's want though.

This seems to have come down to #2 vs #5. There are pros and cons to both:

#5 pros - play every opponent, also we have the flexibility to allow up to 8 playoff teams

#5 cons - puts more weight on the double header weeks (which is why I suggest we only have double headers during the no bye weeks - something that works out perfectly)

#2 pros - every week has the same weight

#2 cons - we either can only have 4 playoff teams and no wildcards or we're stuck with a week 17 championship game (but the only division winners make the playoffs idea is a "pro" to some), also we don't play all the teams every year (we skip four) which means that some teams have easier or harder schedules (but every team within a division has the same opponents the way it's been drawn up)

Add some if I've missed any...

I like option #5. My primary money league does doubleheaders the final week of the season/wildcard game of the playoffs and it has always worked fine.
