Redskins Add Safety Archuleta to Free Agency Haul

Monday March 13, 2006 9:55am

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - The Washington Redskins (website - news) added safety Adam Archuleta to their free agency haul Monday, the team's fourth acquisition in three days.

Archuleta, who had played five years with the St. Louis Rams, joins receivers Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El and tight end Christian Fauria as the newest additions to Joe Gibbs' team.

The hard-hitting safety would appear to be the replacement for Ryan Clark, whom the Redskins were unable to re-sign before the start of free agency, but he also provides insurance in case Sean Taylor misses playing time because of aggravated assault charges in Florida.

The fast & furious dealings created a logjam at Redskins Park, where three separate news conferences were scheduled one hour apart Monday afternoon to introduce new players. And the team isn't done yet: Linebacker Andre Carter, defensive end John Abraham and quarterback Todd Collins are also being wooed.

Archuleta was first-round pick (No. 20 overall) out of Arizona State by the Rams in 2001. He has started 69 of 72 games with 547 tackles, 15 sacks, 25 deflected passes and two interceptions. Last year, he started 14 games and had 93 tackles, 3½ sacks, five pass deflections and one interception.

Sad day for a Rams fan. Along with Tinoisamoa, he has been one of the Rams most consistent defensive players the last couple of years. I would have loved to see him stay.

I hope the Skins go 7-9 and miss the playoffs. Snyder is going to screw the pooch sooner or later.
