fightklub 0 Posted March 30, 2006 http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm CHILDRESS ACTS LIKE A CHILD You'd think that Vikings coach Brad Childress has better things to do. The draft is less than a month away. Minicamps are coming up. Potential free agents are still floating around. But yet Childress still has time to continue to pick at the scab on his butt otherwise known as Daunte Culpepper. Although Childress previously has vowed that he was done talking about Culpepper, the rookie head coach can't help himself, it seems. This time around, Childress is dissing Daunte's decision to rehab his shredded knee in a location that, in Brad's apparent view, isn't good enough for an NFL quarterback. "He's rehabbing in a HealthSouth place in Orlando. . . . I close my eyes. I'm seeing a Chinese restaurant, a HealthSouth place, a laundromat. Basically a strip mall that he's rehabbing himself at. And I'm thinking, what did they have in there? They had a StepMaster and some other things. In other words, all the modalities we have in our training room, all the different things [he didn't have]. . . . I just thought it would be better [to train in Minnesota]." Childress said that, when trainer Eric Sugarman went to Florida in February to check out Culpepper's progress, the quarterback agreed to attempt some basic movement drills. To do the drills, Culpepper led Sugarman out of the rehab facility -- and into the parking lot of a Wal-Mart. "So you can understand where I'm coming from," Childress said. "The Chinese restaurant, the laundromat, then he's in an alley, out the back door and into the Wal-Mart parking lot. I'm like, 'What's wrong with this picture?' . . . This is our franchise quarterback. . . . Is he better served here in the fieldhouse or in the Wal-Mart parking lot?" In our view, Childress is better served shutting his yap about Culpepper, and then sticking to his vow to do so. But, you see, the problem could be that the Triangle of Authority is feeling more than a little nervous about the possibility that Culpepper will make them look like a Circlejerk of Fools for trading him away for a second-round pick in the April draft, and so Childress naturally feels compelled to continue to explain in March, April, May, and June the basis for a decision that could end up coming off as a very bad one come September, October, November, December, January, and/or February. Really, do you think it's a coincidence that Childress broke his promise to not say anything more about Culpepper the day after the NFL announced that Culpepper's new team will be playing in the national spotlight on the two biggest Thursdays of the league year? We sure don't. And we also think there's a strong correlation between a man's ability to hold his tongue and his ability to lead others effectively. But what, you ask, should Childress have done differently? If, as it seems, Culpepper was making poor decisions about the process for rehabbing his surgically repaired knee, how should Childress have made it known? The answer is easy, friends. The coach, or others in the organization, should have leaked the information on an off-the-record basis to the media. That way, the story would have gotten out, without Childress having to say another public word about the situation. One last note on this. Moving forward, Childress needs to keep in mind that Culpepper is now the property of another team. Under league rules, Childress really shouldn't be saying anything at all about him. So maybe the league office will do us all a favor and remind Brad that the time has come to zip his lip regarding the guy that he traded away.

fightklub 0 Posted March 30, 2006 Childress really needs to shut up about Culpepper and focus on the draft. yes he does... I guess he is still pissed he had to give up Culp for a 2nd RD pick. Could he have gotten more if Culpepper did not publicly say he wants to out of Minn? But I guess a 2nd rd pick for a QB with a shattered knee is still pretty good. I really can't believe that everyone feels that B. Johnson is the answer in Minn. Ouch. I really don't think that the QB was the problem. Actully, part of the problem was shown the door... No more tickets to scalp.
Guest stevejohnson Posted March 30, 2006 I still think that Moss made Culpepper, not the other way around and that Culpepper would have struggled in Childress' "West Coast Offense" but to just throw any a guy the was damn near the league MVP just a year earlier isn't the wisest move. I agree with the poster that Childress is just trying to cover his bases in case Culpepper's knee does hold up and he comes back to lead the Fins to the playoffs. Either way, Childress is coming off like a spoiled little kid and should just shut up already and focus on his own team!
Timinator 0 Posted March 30, 2006 To Vikings fans: Childress is not the problem here, Culpepper is. Rehabbing an NFL knee in a Wal-Mart parking lot?? That's a great story. That's a story at Starbuck's or the corner bar. Plus, he's in Orlando now and probably just saw the 'rehab center.' Hey, I find it refreshing 1) that a Vikings coach talks at all--Green's cloak and dagger crap was too much. And 2) that a Vikings coach can speak clearly and intelligently--the rock station here (93X) still plays the Munster's theme when they discuss Tice. You got a coveted new coach this offseason. You've got an aggressive owner. You've got a nice crop of free agents. Don't whine about a draft for which I'm sure Childress' staff is well-prepared. "Enjoy the season!" Mike Mularkey was a coveted coach for two years before he signed on to be the Bill's HC. Any new owner is willing to spend the cash b/c he has a vision for his team and he knows it will cost money. Vikes got a GREAT crop of free agents last year too.
Guest Johnny Holmes Posted March 30, 2006 Hey..no one ever accused Culpepper of being too bright!
LunaTick 30 Posted March 31, 2006 If Childress keeps this up, I may be wanting him replaced before a single preseason game is ever played. I don't see any value in his talking about Dante in private or public. There is no need to explain or express anything here. Only thing is happening is to show a very negative side of yourself. Heck, this really, quite simply, turns me completely off my team. I am this far from ranking him with Les Steckle in terms of Minnesota Coaches. Childress has not yet done anything to garner anymore respect than that just yet.

COACH: I find Childress a lot more encouraging than Mike McCarthy. OWNER: Huge difference between McCombs and Wilf. C'mon. FAs: This year's crop has much more value. Hutch alone makes it better than last year. And Chester, Longwell and Tank all have good upside for a lot less money than Sharper or Pat last year.
Crestwood 0 Posted March 31, 2006 what i find funny is that childress was the o-coordinator under andy reid, who's probaly the most blandest coach ever. i never heard reid ever say anything interesting in 7 years, even throughout the TO fiasco. he known for having the most boringest postgame interviews ever. now childress get a head coaching job and has already flamed a player twice. makes me wonder how he kept muzzled throughout the TO thing. maybe he's just letting out TO frustration of last year on culpepper whatever childress, keep talking, its pretty unprofessional, but its funny as hell
Vince44 205 Posted April 1, 2006 I am starting to beleive more and more with each passing day, that TO got a raw deal when it came to his battles with the Eagles management/coaches. This guy probably tried to bait him. I do remember when the news broke that TO/Childress clashed in the preseason, everyone blamed it on Owens, but this guy Childress looks like someone who likes to pile on and start stuff. joefry 0 Posted April 1, 2006 Brad Childress is proving how much of an ass he is by this unprofessionall behavior. Gee... minny sure has a knack for picking out knuckleheads. I don't understand what all the hype was about with this guy. He was an OC for a team that generally relied on a stud laden defense, both on the college and pro levels. Once his star player went down with a case of attitude his offense didn't look so good. Not to mention the fact that Ried was the one calling the shots anyway. Oh well, chalk up another 7-9 year for the queens. I'm sure they'll start 5-0 though, just like old times.
