Vikings looking at L. Maroney

Recommended Posts

From Fanball.com:

THE NEWS

Former University of Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney met with Vikings officials on Monday, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Vikings hold the No. 17 overall pick in the draft.

Our View

Vikings scouts should be very familiar with Maroney given that he played college ball at their home stadium.

I know teams sometimes bring in a guy to "throw off" other teams but why would the Vikings need another RB when that seemed to be one of their few areas of strength last season?

The Vikes have a few good RBs, but no great ones that can carry the load. I would imagine that this is one of those misleading visits (especially as they didn't have to pay for a plane ride to bring him), but you never know.

I think Taylor could be a solid player in this offense. He has all of the tools and not a lot of wear after playing the back up role for the Ravens. He should at least put up L. Jordan type numbers but I would expect even better because his OL and entire offense is much better then the Raiders but if they really do draft a RB early, maybe Childress knows something we don't.

It means IF they draft him Taylor would be watching from the bench once again. But i heard, just like all the other NFL teams, that the Vikings are looking at every other player in the draft as well....

....it is good to keep your bases covered.

:dunno:

Teams have to give token interest to the hometown favorites. End of story. They will not draft Maroney at 17. Period.

I also read on Sporting news that the Vikes had contact Eddie George's agent. This puzzles me to no end...

Maybe they want what Baltimore had last year. 2 yards and a cloud of dust for 20 carries, and a few nice 10 yard runs by Chester on 3rd down.

Maybe Onterrio is going to fail another test, or MEMO is hurt already. I thought Fason was the "big guy" to replace Moe "TD" Willimas, but maybe they want to cut him. Otherwise, they are set at RB. Chester should do fine. MEMO as 3rd down back, Fason at the stripe, and Onterrio holding the bong on the sideline.

The Vikings don't really have anyone to pound the ball into the endzone. Williams is a free agent, and could be retiring. Onterrio Smith is a mystery (will the coaches actually give him a chance, will they cut his ass, can he stay off the dope, etc), Fason is actually the lightest back on the roster, Taylor has never been known for being able to pound the ball, and MeMo has a history of injuries (although I wonder how many of those were blown out of proportion by Tice). The closest thing to a pounding RB is Adimchinobe Echemandu (5'10, 226 pounds), and he's barely seen any action.

Chester Taylor will get 1300, 400, 12+ TDs next season in that offense. They didn't pay him all of that up front money to ride the pine......

I suppose if George would sign for Vet minimum, he could have a Moe Williams type role. But then why carry Chester, Memo, SOD, and Fason? How many backs are they going to carry? With that left side of the line, I don't think we need a huge back. A leaper will get that 1 yard just fine. Chester showed he could do that last year on one of his TD's.

I still see Maroney as a token visit, sort of like Vince Young visiting the Texans. Though, you never know what tradedowns might occur, so they have to keep all their options open.

Isn't Moore already missing workouts do to a wrist?

He had surgery a month or two ago. He's missing the workouts now, but he should be ready by training camp.

One thing to keep in mind is player visits for players with local ties don't count against the maximum number of draft eligible players that teams can bring in to interview before the draft. It is harder to gauge geniune interest with these players since the only thing the teams lose out on is the time they spend with the player.

I didn't know that.....good point. ;) I would be shocked if they took a RB before round 4.

Those who think Fason will be the guy at the stripe obviously didn't watch any Vikings games last year.......

What about Richardson? Isn't he a Fullback? I would hope your Fullback could get that 1 or 2 yards for the first down or plow it into the end zone for the the score.

Actually, I watched every Vikes game last year. And I also know that Fason led the team in rushing TD's  (with only 32 carris).

But I agree he is probably too small and probably won't get to be the goalline guy. Probably....

Frankly I don't know who will. I don't really see a reason that Chester doesn't stay in for goalline, but who the heck knows.

With a 40 year old QB and crap WR's? Sounds like he's set up for a Willis McGahee-type season.

He should start, but it doesn't mean he'll produce. And with all of that RB talent on the bench, if he doesn't produce early, he could lose the job. Remember, Onterrio Smith was the next big thing a few seasons ago. If he can get his head straight, he has the talent to take the starting job away if Taylor sputters in what looks to be a pretty conservative (i.e., crap) offence.

 I'll drink to that but let me add "at Least" to the quote!
