DBZFan2K 0 Posted April 30, 2006 Its a 3rd string TE on a day 1 draft pick. I like the 1st two selections, but you cant spin this one into a positive light. Sure you can. Ben Watson became a third string TE on a day 1 pick when the Pats selected him two years ago (considering they already had Fauria and Graham heading their TE core). He's not going to make an immediate impact as a starter or anything, but in Thomas they get an additional receiver to the offense, who is more of an H-back type. Garrett Mills is the top ranked FB prospect, though I would've rather they waited until later and snagged Quadtrine Hill. I don't know how to explain the lack of defensive selections except to say Belichick and Pioli must not like the remaining defensive players in the draft. TD Ryan2 316 Posted April 30, 2006 I think Special teams is a big part of all this too. Each guy drafted so far can/will make an impact on special teams. Lately, NE has been mediocre (at best) in the coverage and return game. There was a time when they made a living off of big sp.teams plays. Maybe some of these guys will help them get back to that. SayChowda 0 Posted April 30, 2006 Just got back from Monteal for the weekend, but from hearing/reading just the basics, I loved the Pats day 1 draft. Don't know much about today yet, although, I am excited we did draft that kicker. I think most of us expected one in the later rounds, and we got one. ratbastard1 0 Posted May 1, 2006 Most the draft picks seem to have a high motor and are very competetive. Multi faceted driven depth at the least.

Good call here TD. I hadn't thought about it until you posted this, but I think you're right on. The Pats ST has been below average lately, and I'm sure that ate BB up. The focus this draft seemed 2-fold, depth at skill positions with immediate impact on ST... we'll see how it plays out.
Captain Lou 0 Posted May 1, 2006 Its a 3rd string TE on a day 1 draft pick. I like the 1st two selections, but you cant spin this one into a positive light. Third string tight end Walt? Hardly. This guy is like a vacume cleaner. Tough, smart, will go over the middle, a true Patriot. Here is my take on this pick. David Givens led the NFL in converting third downs into first downs. David is now a Titan. The Patriots drafted a player not only to fill the void left by Fauria, but also to plug in another player who can make a big play and keep a drive alive. He can make tough catches, and I think that this was a great value pick. I like this kid.
SayChowda 0 Posted May 2, 2006 The Patriots signed Alabama middle linebacker Freddie Roach as a rookie free agent. He was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection last season. They also added Vernell Brown, a cornerback from Florida, and Vanderbilt receiver Erik Davis. The News Journal in Delaware reported that Delaware State All-American safety/linebacker Sam Smith signed with the Patriots. The Tallahassee Democrat said Florida State safety Kyler Hall is expected to sign with the team as well. The Patriots drafted 10 players and will bring as many as 25 rookies to their rookie minicamp May 13-14. link - globe
