Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted May 2, 2006 Why he should have been the 2005 MVP. The guy is clutch. Game after game. I am sure that you have no idea, but the wind was blowing 30+mph straight in all night and you had to hit a BOMB to get it out of that park. I thought that it was going to be a small ball game, which was why the Willie Harris run before that (to make it 4-3) was the key. Either way, that was a great game to watch. Nice atmosphere, nice drama, awesome baseball for May 1. I hope that the rest of the games this season are half as exciting as that game was.

For ALL the hype Sox-Yanks get -- and I can certainly understand the complaints of fans outside the Northeast -- they *do* normally wind up having some great, great games. Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted May 2, 2006 For ALL the hype Sox-Yanks get -- and I can certainly understand the complaints of fans outside the Northeast -- they *do* normally wind up having some great, great games. I watch pretty much all 19 games between the teams, and there are maybe 4 that are that good each year. Add in the hype of the games beforehand and it is that much better. That game was a solid game to watch. The Sox could/should have blown it open early (subject to interpretation) but the Yanks held them at bay. Wakefield with Mirabelli seemed like a different pitcher (confidence-wise) and the wind was blowing in. Add that to the fact that Sheffield was out and the Yankee juggernaut was not in full force. If you did not see the game, you did not appreciate the managerial situations (Torre and Guidry worked some magic there) and there were some weird plays that impacted the game. Not sure if everyone got this sense, but I had a feel that this was a playoff game and we are sitting at May 1. P.S. Did anyone outside of Boston notice that Mirabelli arrived via State Police transport about 10 minutes before game time dressed in his uniform (he changed in the SUV) and that they delayed the start of the game for him? P.S.S. That was a class move by Damon to tip his cap to the fans, the bench and Wakefield before his first at-bat. I would have given him a standing ovation during his first at-bat and then boo'ed him every other at bat. I was disappointed that others did not think the same way, but we have some chumps in the stand.

The game was Nationally televised, so I did get to see it. When he firs thit it, I was thinking the wind would kill it like it did for Mirabelli's earlier. But the fact that it still went out while going into that wind is amazing.
NewbieJr 541 Posted May 2, 2006 He is an awesome hitter. Kind of reminds me of a guy on my slowpitch team. Earl, his name is. Couldn't hide him anywhere on the field, because he ate himself to the point of being an embarrassment of an athlete, but the fat phuck could sure hit the long ball. Good job, Earl and Papi. paulinstl 296 Posted May 2, 2006 Any real baseball fan likes to see the Sox/Yanks series. Although sometimes it does get old when ESPN Sportscenter does the first fifteen minutes of every show every time they hook up. Ortiz is a stud!

What is amazing is how fast his bat speed is. Even on base hits, he seems to hit the ball when it seemed too late to make contact.
TD Ryan2 316 Posted May 2, 2006 - The Johnny Damon return to Fenway - The Mirabelli, cross country trade/journey, state police escort, arrive 8 minutes before the game - The Yankees trying to c0ck-block the trade - Big Papi late inning home run -Papelbon, young phenom closer, 21 consecutive scoreless innings - also Sox-Yankees, greates sports rivalry it's May 1st and a baseball game has THIS much going for it!? cmh is the only Royals fan that even knows their backup catcher's name, nevermind police escorts and standing ovations for him. I understand that ESPN ruins it for everyone. But these games are unbelievable.

While I appreciate the accolades, the team just went out and got Mirabelli to catch Wakefield, so it was sorta a big damn deal
