Priest Holmes may not return

Recommended Posts

CBS Sportsline reports:

Priest Holmes might not return

Priest Holmes, RB KC

News: According to reports, the chances of Priest Holmes (neck) returning to the Kansas City Chiefs next season are less than 50 percent. He was expected to undergo more neurological tests in late June and early July to help determine whether he can continue playing football.

Analysis: It might not be a coincidence that the Chiefs have reported some interest in Michael Bennett, who has become expendable in New Orleans. Holmes' status is uncertain at best at this point in the offseason.

Pretty much what many of us were saying in the discussion of 1st overall pick.

Knowing Michael Bennett is likely the 3rd down back in KC just put LJ's value through the roof IMO - anyone knows that Bennett ain't taking LJ's gig. Ever.

Praying for 1.01 at the WCOFF.

Good find and yes, just what most of us thought. Best of luck with the #1 choice as you've picked the right guy. LJ will be a monster.

wow - finally news about Holmes' status and no one cares?

:P

Where's all the LJ detractors who thought Holmes presence would impact LJ's #s?

Like both you and I have been saying for weeks now sooter, Holmes is a non-factor fantasy wise in KC this year whether he suits up or not. Fork=Holmes career.

You know he wouldn't come back - this is an injury that could lead to paralysis - It's not a debate

Scooter you taking LJ #1 if you get it? I would love to know your top 12 since you are about to be on the clock for wcoff!

POST IT - top 12 - do it - just do it (that's my ben stiller starsky and hutch imitation) Do IT!- who are you taking with #8 or # 5 or #10? The pressure's on - top 12!

Does that mean this could turn into another Bagwell type of situation?

DO IT!

I love that scene - funniest thing in that whole movie.

And yes - 1.01 in any format, I am taking LJ.

I kick myself because in an early bird draft, starting in Feburary, I took LT2 in a PPR league at 1.02. LJ went at 1.03. Fortunately it's a free league and just for bragging rights, but still...

The KC situation was dicey, Priest was talking a good game, etc.

As for my top 12, it's still up in the air. I have a lot of time to refine it.

So far I'm pretty well set on (for a PPR format, with flex TE/WR/RB)

1.01 LJ

1.02 Alexander

1.03 LT2

sort of hoping for 3rd overall, since I have mad man-love for LT2 and I'd get that 2.10 pick...

1.04 Portis

1.05 Edge

And I might even grab Edge at 1.04 - that offense is going to be wide open. A mediocre O-line will be excellent for Edge with the aerial attack AZ is sporting. And if Warner goes down, Edge gets 2X the carries.

1.06 Tiki - and reluctantly because I think he might be a big bust

1.07 uh, here's where it gets dicey - Ronnie Brown...scary and a bit of a reach, but I think that team will be run-based while CPep is healing up, and I think Brown will be the benificiary. Only problem is that Harrington may not be able to sustain drives if he starts.

1.08 - Carnell Williams - the injury prone tag is supplanted by the talent and upside. I think he's worth the risk here as my #1 RB in a Gruden offense in a PPR league. I think his off-season receiving drills are going to result in a TB version of DDavis. He has a real nose for the end zone too.

1.09 - SJax - I'm high on him, but with the word of Faulk getting 10-14 carries a game, that's going to eat into his production a bit. Still, he's a strong, young, healthy back and Faulk will likely be hurt by week 5.

1.10 - Willis McGahee - the team around him scares me a bit, but the guy has talent enough to be a borderline RB1...and since you pick again early 2nd, I think he could be a strong play here. Not sure I wouldn't take Rudi though if push comes to shove. That Bengals offense is far more explosive.

1.11 - Rudi Johnson - see: 1.10

1.12 - Here's a really dicey pick. In a PPR, damn the injury risk - it's Westbrook. If Westbrook touches the ball 300 times, as expected, he'll be a stat machine.

And you know, LaMont Jordan could replace any of the bottom 5.

There's my top 12 & a half, off the cuff and with justification. Bear in mind that I'm drunk, and I'll probably change all of this tomorrow.

Oh, and in a way I'm almost hoping for 1.12 - I'd go Westbrook => Owens => Dunn => Droughns or LJordan =>Westbrook =>Dunn => best available WR

Scoot all over LJ?

What a difference a year makes.

Didn't even take a year...traded for him in week 5 or 6. Carried me to another losing championship game. lol

Thanks for putting it out there on the line - Tiki just scares me to death, I just can't take the guy - The rest looks pretty good for me. It's going to be a tough call for anyone in that 7-12 range. Way to " just do it"

this isn't news, this is all speculation

QWhy don't you go out on a limb and tell us why you reported to us that Priest Holmes was cleared to play football weeks ago? I think as a season ticket holder I deserve to know the truth.

KCBH, Lee's Summit Mo. 5/31/06

AKCBH, I understand your frustrations about Priest, but we've never reported that he's been cleared to play. Months ago, in February maybe, he was given the OK to condition and work out. But nobody has ever said he could participate in football drills. Here's a sampling of what we've reported over the last couple of months: May 20: Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said Holmes is "making progress" after suffering a neck injury in late October. If the season started today, Holmes wouldn't play, Peterson said, because doctors are still concerned about contact. May 4: Coach Herm Edwards said Wednesday that Holmes will not be in Kansas City when offseason practice starts in two weeks because he hasn't been medically cleared. Holmes has been seeing a spinal specialist, Robert Watkins, after getting the worst of a helmet-to-helmet collision with Shawne Merriman at midseason in San Diego. "I told him, `Hey, when you get cleared, when you get ready in your mind to get back here, you need to be back here,'" Edwards said. April 23: Priest Holmes is working out in San Antonio, as he has for at least three offseasons, and the Chiefs said Thursday that they're still operating as if he will play in 2006. "As I said many other times specific to Priest Holmes," Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said, "I would not count him out. "He's making progress. If we had to start today, right now, the doctors would still not clear him for contact. But we don't have to start today, and he's going to be evaluated again later this spring."

Elizabeth Merrill 6/02/06

the chiefs are still counting on Priest to play, and he's working out to get to that point. This is all going to depend on what the doctors say, but if he can play, he will play.

From everything I've read, that spinal condition may never allow him to be cleared to play.

So your "if" is a pretty big one there.

My bet is that he doesn't. The Michael Bennett pursuit by the Chiefs seems like the writing is on the wall.

the michael bennett pursuit seems like they are covering their asses in a worst-case scenario. It's not going to surprise me if Priest don't play, but it ain't going to surprise me when he suits up week 1 either. Hell, even if they put him on the PUP list they can still use him come mid-season if he's ready then, but you still need another back on the team besides LJ and Q Griffin. That's where the pursuit of Griffin comes from, not that the writing on the wall is that his career is over.

You mthodology for evaluating backs in interesting but I don't support it. You seem to say: Poor passing game and / or poor OL play = more carries for the RB which is good.

Well I think a good pasing game opens up the offense and sustains drives which is good for the RB. (Not really a novel approach) Only an absurd passing team or a team that always passes in the redzone is a concern.

If you want to look at other factors consider defense. If the team has the lead late then the RB gets carries in the game late (provided they are a big back)

If they fall behind they may not be involved (unless they are a great receiving back).
