Drafting from the 9th spot in a 12 teamer

Recommended Posts

Here are my results from several mocks where I am drafting from the ninth spot. Some good info for anyone who has the same pick. I tried a couple of different scenarios and I found that grabbing a strong #1 RB first and a strong #1 WR next really worked out the best to me. When I went RB, RB I ended up with a solid #2 RB but the WR I ended up with weren't nearly as good. Personal preference, but some good info nonetheless.

HTH someone.

If you don't have a Top 3 pick, 9th is a GREAT spot to draft from this year in a 12 teamer. You can take your pick of the remaining tier 2 RB talent and pretty much have your choice of top tier WRs or another tier 2 RB that might drop to you on the turn.

I'd be quite happy with pretty much any of those teams you've put together so far.

9-12, if ur not in the top 3, i believe is one of the best other spots to draft. being in the middle of the draft is a disadvantage i believe.

the team with edge and westbrook please...

I was really shocked when Edge fell to me, only happened once.

McNabb in the 5th seems to be a popular pick. I'm not a huge fan of Rudi J but he has done well enough to warrant such a high pick.

I'm hoping I land the 9-12 picks in my couple re-draft leagues.

The big drop off for me is the 5th pick. After LJ, LT, SA, Portis and Tiki you might as well pick at 12.

Rudi had pretty good numbers. He is definately a top ten back in my opinion.

man love for McNabb or what?

interesting draft results...

I will jump all over McNabb if he falls to the 5th round...somehow I doubt he will last past 3rd round in my draft.

He is in for a big bounce back year. Top 5 QB for sure but I think he will be top 3.

No different than any other year IMHO. I NEVER want a middle pick. Most years, my first choice would be at the end.

I am planning on trying a new strategy in a mock draft tonight. I am interested to see if I can still end up with two starting RB if I draft WR, WR with my first two picks. I am thinking of going with Terrell Owens and Larry Fitzgerald as my first two picks.

I am also thinking of experimenting with grabbing Westbrook with my first pick and seeing what other RB I can get with my second pick. I have found that picking 9th I don't always have the option of getting Westbrook with my second pick. Grabbing him with the first pick and then grabbing a stud WR with my second pick might be a good strategy. Westy has a lot more value in a PPR league so he may well be worth a first round pick.

I would be very interested to see what RBs you'd end up with going WR/WR at the turn in the first.

I've toyed with the idea this year after going RB/RB as long as I can remember. But when the draft comes around in a couple of months, I'll be chickens... unless I see a few successful examples of it being done.

BTW, thanks for showing your results. This took quite a bit of effort and is MUCH more useful than a single mock result. Though it does show your manlove for particular players!

Yeah, I tried to grab a couple of the same guys but I didn't always draft with the same people so I wanted to be sure that I could still get the guys I wanted in the round I wanted them in with a different group each time. Last season I figured I could get McNabb and Vick in the 5th or later......McNabb went in the third and Vick went at the top of the fourth.....you never know what people have on their own "cheat sheet."

That was just the first of many mocks I will do though.

I am thinking if I take two WR, I can still grab Deshaun Foster, Rueben Droughns or maybe even Corey Dillon or Willie Parker in the third and fourth round. In a PPR style league, it can be done successfully. I dont know if I would do it in a non PPR league though.

Reading this only confirms what I already knew - I really don't want the 9th pick or higher in this year's draft. Except for Rudi, I don't trust any of those RBs. And Rudi's points last year seem more like a solid 2nd round RB.

Unfortunatley, I usually end up picking late in every draft.

not sure I like that draft

That makes two of us.

Problem is I really want Westbrook. Getting Westbrook means passing on good receivers. I am not excited about my receivers at all. Moulds and Muhammid were good value picks though.

though moulds is houston now not Buff... and thats one reason why I don't like him as much.

That is one of the main reasons I DO like him. Kubiak is there. Look what he has done with Rod Smith. I expect the same from Moulds this season.

I think that you got good value for Moose (especially in a PPR) and I think that you got great value for Moulds. I like the fact that he is on Houston and not Buffalo. If Kubiak's system can give Carr time, I see both Moulds and Johnson having a good year. Teams can't double both of them.

Did another mock tonight....a little different strategy....

1. Westbrook

2. Owens

3. Wayne

4. Foster

5. Fred Taylor

6. McNabb

I know 1.09 seems high for Westbrook but in some drafts, he isn't making it back to me with the second pick. I like him a lot in a PPR. I am not positive that Lamont Jordan will catch as many balls in his new offense and Domanick Davis' knee injury really scares me. That leaves Westy as the best pass catching runningback left on the board. I think Foster is really going to surprise a lot of people this season and I will handcuff him to Williams later in the draft for sure. Probably Moats to Westbrook as well. I even added Fred Taylor later in the draft, he is supposidly really healthy this season and in great shape so he was a good value pick to me.

Owens and Wayne are a nasty combo at WR, I was thrilled with that.

Grabbed McNabb again, this time a round later. I was really happy with that.

Great Thread !!!

I've been completely obsessed with this strategy as well.

Right now Iam leaning toward the RB, WR, WR, RB pattern,

but it is d*/mn close!

Yeah, you can take that average draft position crap and throw it right out the window. Depends on how hot a guy gets after camp, personal preference of the guys you are drafting with, etc.

I've done about 15 mocks from the 10th spot. Everytime I think I can get a decent #2RB in Round 3, it totally bombs. Even guys like Dunn are gone.

The only option I've found other than RB, RB is to go RB, WR, WR, TE, RB, RB. You end up with your #2 RBs being guys like A Green, CMart, or Fred Taylor...but you can get 2 of them.

The best lineup I got with this strategy was:

R Brown

TO

Gates

R Wayne

CMart

A Green

Then you have to draft a Trent Green/Delhomme type in round 7.

My lineup right now is Lamont Jordan(Coulda had SJax, but came back with 8 seconds left cause i had a phone call and panicked lol...), Ronnie Brown, Donald Driver, and Kevin Jones....drafted in that order.

QB TDs are worth 6 points so been alot of QB love...

Two most recent mocks, went with WR, WR, RB, RB in one and WR, RB, RB, WR in the other. I actually like both teams. In the first one, I could have had Steve Smith instead of Owens. In the second one, I went with Steve Smith first and Owens was gone at my next pick, so was Fitz, so I took Westy. In the second draft, WR went fast in the 2nd/3rd so I went RB RB in that one. I also waited on McNabb in the first one, seeing if he would slip to the 6th round, nope, he sure didnt. So I grabbed the best available WR and went with the best available QB in the 7th, which was the very under rated Trent Green. Hasselback has been making his way up the draft boards as well, sometimes going as soon as the 5th round.

I will continue to update this each time I do a mock. I am interested to see the values of some players change as we get closer to the season.

If you are drafting in a points per reception league the RB's fall differently I have noticed. Have you been doing PPR or non PPR?

Gates is a really solid option, if you can't get a stuf WR, Gates is just as good, if not better.

I've been doing both just to do a lot of drafts. I've noticed the same thing.

I doubt Gates will be around in the late 3rd since I'm in TE required leagues.

I'm pretty set on drafting Jordan, Brown, Rudi, or Caddy in the 10 slot. One of them will be on the board.

If TO, Smith or Manning are there at 2.03, I'm tyring to decide if I should bite on them and hope for the best with a RB2 in the next rounds. So far, it keeps failing when I try it.

I don't think Mike minds us mentioning this site...

www.antsports.com

On the bottom left you can sign up for a mock draft. They take like 6-9 days depending on the slackers that sign up. Please use the pre-draft function. It speeds it up, plus it'll help you get Serious Mock Draft (SMD) status. Those take way less time and have people more dedicated to it.

HTH.

I did use Antsports each time but I drafted with different people each draft, some of the same but usually about 4-6 new people.

Texas,

You seem to target Trent Green a lot (usually rounds 6-7) and I am wondering why. Is there a reason that you like him this year or is he the best QB available at that point in the draft? I like the other picks you target, especially in the later rounds (like Moulds and Moats), so I would like to know you rationale for consitently picking Green.

Thanks.

Thanks.

i actually only took green twice, at the position, he was the best QB available. there seems to be a group of "older" Qb there around that time, Green, Warner, Bledsoe, Favre, McNair, and sometimes Plummer, all of which I think are a tremendous value.

I like Green specifically because he seems to quietly put up solid numbers every year. i started comparing his stats with the other guy I targeted, McNabb, and I am starting to think I would rather build a little depth at RB or WR or even grab a solid TE in the fifth instead of McNabb and then grab one of the other guys I mentioned later in the draft.

Another guy I have targeted a lot is Steve McNair, mainly because this guy is going into an offensive powerhouse. Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, and Todd Heap are going to be huge. Billick doesn't get a lot of credit because his QB have stunk but with him and the Giants cast off on the staff, McNair could enjoy some really nice numbers. I think Heap may have his best season yet. I like McNair a lot because I can usually grab him in the 10th as well.
