In Flames - Swedish band that has been pretty influential in modern melodic death metal. Probably should have been At The Gates on this list instead as they were the first and most influential in that genre.

 

Mercyful Fate - King Diamond's first band. Very influential band for Lars Ulrich. Metallica made a medley of a bunch of there songs on Garage Inc. called "Mercyful Fate". Classic 80's european metal sound with VERY challenging vocals (for those unfamiliar with King Diamond).

 

Venom - 80's metal band that used a lot of jokey satanic images and themes. Singled handedly created and coined the name of the genre known as black metal.

 

I agree with you on ther non-metal entries. I don't consider Tool to be metal either...just extremely focking awesome!

MEGADETH should be in the top ten.

 

Iron Maiden rules over all of them.

GoColts, for once, we agree on something. GNR should be in that list. GNR was short lived, but Appetite, Lies, and Use your Illusion I & II were second to none. One of my favorite bands.

I agree..One of my favorite bands of all time, But wouldn't you consider them "Hard Rock", versus "Heavy Metal" ?
