Eagles: Stallworth has slight hamstring strain

The News

Eagles wide receiver Donte Stallworth did not practice on Thursday, and head coach Andy Reid finally revealed the results of an MRI taken earlier in the week. Reid told the team's official web site that Stallworth has slight strain. "It's one that's just enough to bug on you," Reid said. "You don't want it to get any worse. We're being cautious with it." Stallworth missed the week three game in San Francisco and is questionable for Monday night's clash against the Packers.

Our View

Unfortunately, Reid's comments don't help with our obvious question of if Stallworth will be available on Monday night or not. We'll continue to monitor his status and provide updates, but fantasy owners need to make sure they have another receiver ready for their lineups.

Dawkins, Stallworth and Westbrook skip Eagles practice

By Marc Narducci

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

A number of key players were held out of practice as the Eagles returned to work today. The Birds, who will host the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football in an 8:30 p.m. game at Lincoln Financial Field, have been away from the field since Sunday's 38-24 win at Monster Park against the San Francisco 49ers.

Cornerback Lito Sheppard, who has been sidelined since suffering a sprained right ankle in the opening series of the Eagles' opening game, against the Houston Texans, wasn't able to practice.

On Monday, coach Andy Reid indicated that Sheppard would be returning to practice this week.

"Lito is close but not quite there yet," Reid said during his news conference today at the NovaCare Complex.

Other players who didn't practice were free safety Brian Dawkins (concussion); cornerback Roderick Hood (strained right heel); wide receiver Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) and running back Brian Westbrook (swelling in his right knee).

Of those players, only Stallworth didn't play in Sunday's game.

Reid didn't seem concerned about the status of Dawkins for the Packers game.

"He will be OK in the next couple of days," Reid said. "We are keeping an eye on him."

Reid added that Hood was a little better than at this stage a week ago but that his heel was still tender. Stallworth has what Reid described as a slight strain in his hamstring.

"You don't want it to get worse, and we are being cautious," he said.

Caution is also being used to monitor Westbrook, who missed most of the practice time the previous two weeks with swelling in his right knee.

"Brian was able to go through the walk-through this morning and has a little swelling, and we'll wait until that does down," Reid said.

Injuries aside, the Eagles appear excited at the prospect of playing on the national stage.

"The world is going to be watching. That's exciting," guard Shawn Andrews said. "It's a great feeling to play on Monday night."

I would sit him this week. It will probably be another game time decision, and being Monday night, you'll get screwed.

I am starting Troy Williamson in his place this week.

I have the option of Driver or Stallworth for my 2nd receiver. I am torn even if Stallworth IS playing.

Sheppard remains 'doubtful'

LES BOWEN

Eagles coach Andy Reid spoke optimistically on Monday of Lito Sheppard practicing this week.

"This week" did not turn out to be yesterday, and the Eagles continue to list their top cornerback as "doubtful" for Monday's encounter with Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.

"It's up in the air, but it's more 'doubtful' than 'probable,' " Sheppard said yesterday, though he held out hope for getting into a practice today or tomorrow, then playing in the game. "You never know. I don't want to put any limits on myself."

You can hardly blame Reid for wanting to push things a little. The Eagles gave up 44 points after halftime in their last two games, with Sheppard's replacement, Rod Hood, suffering a heel injury against the Giants and aggravating it against the 49ers. Reid seems extremely reluctant to see what a whole game's worth of Joselio Hanson on the corner would look like, with Hanson still new to the team and still learning the intricacies of Jim Johnson's defense.

Asked yesterday about Sheppard, Reid said: "He's close. He's just not quite there yet."

"We're trying," Sheppard said. "We're just working our way back into motion."

Sheppard is no longer limping, he noted, but his view is that if he can't run full speed, "there's no use in me being out there - I'm a liability... I just want to make sure I'm able bring to the table what I'm used to doing. If I can't do that, then I'm not going to go out there."

Sheppard suffered an ankle sprain on the first series of the season opener, Sept. 10 in Houston. With Hood healthy - and the Texans not very good - the defense didn't seem to miss a beat. The last 2 weeks, with Hood limping off both times and free safety Brian Dawkins leaving the San Francisco game with a concussion, the defense has looked scrambled.

"When guys are forced to step in, it's a difficult task," Sheppard said. "I've been in the system, this is my fifth year, and it wasn't all peaches and cream when I first got here. It's about learning the system and getting comfortable with everything before you can actually go out there and perform like everybody thinks and wants you to. It's nothing against nobody; it's just not the same, that's all."

Hood, who did not practice yesterday and also is listed as "doubtful," said Wednesday he hopes to play, as he did last week after not practicing and going into game day under the same designation.

Dawkins also did not practice yesterday. He is listed as "questionable," but Reid said Dawkins would "be OK here in the next couple days."

Dawkins said he was "very concerned" about the defense's recent tendency to give up big plays.

"One or two every four games would be good, instead of one or two a game," Dawkins said. "That's something that we don't want and we're not going to settle for."

Patterson's patter

After that 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown Sunday, Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson had a message for running backs Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter when he came across them on the sideline, Patterson said yesterday.

"I went, 'Hey, I'm coming for y'all's spot, y'all better watch it,' " Patterson said.

Birdseed

Brian Westbrook won the NFL FedEx Ground Player of the Week in online fan voting, netting a $5,000 donation for Children's Hospital... Andy Reid said Westbrook didn't practice yesterday because he still has "a little swelling" in his injured knee. It sounded as if Westbrook probably will play again this week... Wide receiver Donté Stallworth (hamstring) did not practice and is listed as questionable, but Stallworth said, "I'll be highly upset if I'm not playing" Monday night.

He should be drooling to play vs Packers. Plus its MON nite football. All the media attention and national televised game. I just cant see him sitting this one out. Plus He should be well rested, having over two weeks off.

The thing i'm worried about is he was Probable last week and now is questionable. If he doesn't practice today, I would not start him.

I wouldn't say I bought low on Reggie Brown, but I gave up Jones-Drew for him. I needed WR help and have too many RB's (Alexander, MoMo, Dillon, Maroney, D.Foster, and MBIII), he'd never crack my starting lineup.

I've owned Stallworth 2 different years and he is a headache. I do think Reggie Brown will have more fantasy points at the end of the year and I feel comfortable enough having him as my WR #3.

This is the main reason why NO got rid of him...he's always got hamstring problems.

There is no denying that he is talented, but what good does that do you if he's always :dunno:

I'm not too worried about Stallworth. Yeah, I want the guy out there catching TD's from Donovan, but I am covered. If Stallworth, who is a game time decision, doesn't play, I also have Reggie Brown.

More details:

http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily...es/15640675.htm

Wide receiver Donte' Stallworth and free safety Brian Dawkins returned to practice for the Eagles today. Stallworth missed Sunday's 38-24 win over the San Francisco 49ers at Monster Park due to a hamstring injury.

He didn't appear bothered by the injury while running routes today in practice. Dawkins suffered a concussion in the third quarter of Sunday's win and didn't return.

:(

Reggie Brown might be the better play this week. Stallworth is not 100% and might get double coverage..... He might not even play the whole game if it's a blowout. He might "tweak" his hamstring again during the game.... Reggie Brown is a safer pick.

just my 2 cents.

The one thing that is for sure is that Donte Stallworth will have Al Harris on him, the only decent CB on the Packers. Donte is no secret now like he was the first two games.

My Opinion: START ALL EAGLES BECAUSE THIS GAME WILL BE A SHOOTOUT!

He didn't say Stallworth wouldn't play -- just that Brown was a safer option.

Very well said. It will be a shootout, I HAVE NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. Just like have NO DOUBT that Donte will play this game. I am going to let Stallworth ride it out, he himself said he is drooling to go vs the Packers. Hmm national tv audiance, talk of the town in philly. Yup, he is gonna play.
