Who invented Fantasy Football

Recommended Posts

Fantasy Football became a term I learned around the mid 1990s. I have a friend who claims to have been playing fantasy football since 1989. Is this accurate. Who layed the groundwork for fantasy football and do we know when it actually began???

I started in 1988 but it was around in the early 80s. If you remember the first Rotissiere baseball leagues which began in the late 70s, football was incarnated soon afterward. My first exposure to it came in 1985 in college, but at that time it was like pulling teeth to recruit guys to play.

It's been refined quite a bit since then, but that's my first recollection.

It's not really fantasy football as we know it now, but when I was in high school (late '80's), 6 of us chose a QB & 2 RBs every week...TD only. I joined my first "real" FF league my second year of law school ('94 season); 10 teams, TD only, but utilizing a full roster (except no TEs)... My main league (12 team redraft) has been in existence since 1996; only 3 of us have been in it the whole time...

I dunno when it started but I had a team in the late 70's. I remember having Grogan, Dorsett, Torkelson, Muncie and the Eagles D. God knows who my TE was and I don't remember having a K back then.

The league I am in started in 1986, and there are 3 of us that have been in it every year since then. Those other 2 are the ones that turned me on to FF, and they had played for at least 3 years before then.

This brings a smile to my face; Eric Torkelson (RB - UConn) was my favorite Packer as a kid. Why in the world was he on your fantasy team? I'm too lazy to look it up but the guy never started and I doubt he ever gained over 300 yards in a season...

Four of us played a very basic version of fantasy football in Junior High in the mid-1970's. We'd redraft every Friday at lunch; 5 rounds with 1 QB, 2RB & 2 WR. TD Only. Fantasy football was really invented by four 7th Graders at Baxter Community School in 1974!

Fantasy Football

Thanks for this link. It confirms what someone at the WCOFF draft in Vegas told me a few years ago. He mentioned using George Blanda as one of his players.

I started playing in 1989. I was in 11th grade. I once had a boss who had been playing with a group of his friends since the late 70's.

When I first started in the late 80's, we did everything by hand. We would wait for the Monday morning paper & start adding up points. It actually made playing a bit more fun if you can believe it.

My first league was 1986.... I was 11 years old.... I remember it like it was yesterday.... My brother in law was in a high priced lawyers league and he didn't know much about football but wanted to be in it, so he brought me to draft for him because I was a stat freak from the day I was born it seemed.... they laughed at him for bringin a youngster to draft for him, but we finished in 2nd place the first year.... Best 3rd round pick of my life to this date... George Rogers in the 3rd... I think he dropped like 20 Td's that year .... ah the good ol days before books and the net

I started a league for the first time in 1990. Yeah that was when you had to wait for the Monday paper to score the games. I remember knowing about alot of the players from their football cards.

It has been around a long time. I had a boss who was playing "rotisserie" baseball and football in the mid 80's.

I read about fantasy football in 1979 in an article in Inside Sports Magazine, and then started our league in 1980. Earl Campbell and Dan Fouts were the 1st two players chosen. It's evolved over the years, and in 1990 we went to a dynasty format. Most of the current owners have been in the league for 15+ years. It's a tradition!

We started our league in 1985, my sophmore year of high school. Same guys today -- this is our 22nd year. I think I had Kurt Warner in that first year. The first in a long string of dud RBs. Best part is the draft -- we've drafted in 10 different cities across the country.

Baseball and Football cards were the best.

Back then, you could really appreciate pro sports because there weren't a plethora of games on the tube (hell, basic cable didn't even carry alot of games except the Cubs and WOR in NY carrying the Mets).

Always watched baseball/football games on the weekends, MNF, and TWIB on Saturday mornings.

Ironic that ESPN pretty much killed the excitement watching pro sports.

I've been playing since 1989 and mistakenly thought that everyone just picked a QB in the first round.

I picked Phil Simms, who through like 9 TDs that year.

I came in dead last.

The next year, I had Boomer Esiason and his top receiver, Eddie Somethingorother, as well as some kick-ass running backs and made it all the way to the final game.

In aother league, I had Jim Everett and Henry Ellard, and I also got to the final game with those guys.
