So...Why shouldn't Rutgers be considered for BCS title game?

Recommended Posts

Now...as an SEC fan, I don't know how I'd feel about Rutgers getting into the championship game over a team like Florida. However, even I think they at least deserve some consideration for the championship game if they remain undefeated...

The Big East isn't as good as a couple of other conferences, but it isn't as bad as alot of people think. And it's certainly much tougher than it has been in recent years. Louisville and West Virginia are very good teams. And Pitt and even South Florida are better than a lot of people realize. So, it's not like Rutgers has had a cake-walk in their conference (like USC had a couple of years ago in a weak Pac-10).

When you look at opponents that they've shared with other high-ranked teams, here's what you discover:

Rutgers def. Illinois 33-0

Ohio St. def. Illinois 17-10

Rutgers def. Navy 34-0

Notre Dame def. Navy 38-14

Rutgers def. UConn 24-13

West Virginia def. Uconn 37-11

Pretty comparable to other high-ranked teams (and, sometimes, Rutgers has performed even better than other high-ranked teams).

They've got one of the best RBs in the country with Ray Rice, and a coach who has consistently motivated his players to perform at a high-level (16-5 in the past couple of years despite lesser talent than high-profile schools). Should Rutgers really be punished this year (despite their excellent play) because their football program isn't as historically prestigious as Texas or Michigan or Notre Dame???

Ultimately, I'm not saying that Rutgers should definitely be in the BCS title game. But...there seems to at least be an argument in favor of Rutgers... :headbanger: Who'd a thunk it???

Yeah, if they beat WVU also, they deserve the shot, I hope they do run the table. As a TEXAS fan, I would love another shot with seasoned Colt McCoy, but we had our shot at #1 and couldn't pull it off, maybe things will fall into place for us. Texas still has work to do, so does Fla., Auburn, Cal, Rutgers... When michigan gets romped it will keep them quiet.

Whether Rutgers win out or not doesn't really matter. They ain't getting into the National Title game, because their schedule sucks. IMO, the National title race pretty much comes down to Florida and Texas. Both have to win out, and both need to do it with style points.

Florida still has 3 tough games left: South Carolina, FSU and the SEC Championship game (either Auburn or Arkansas). All potential losses. Texas only has Texas A&M and a cake walk Big 12 Championship game left. IMO if both run the table, Florida deserves to get in on strength of schedule alone. But that's no gaurantee.

Is Rutgers playing AT West Virginia?

If so, if they can go into that environment and still win, they deserve their shot should they run the table. The Big East is better this year than it's been in many a year.

Like someone said, a playoff system would solve all of this nonsense, but it does make for great debate.

Great win for them....but now they will lose at WV and all will be as it should. I hope they do win out though because we need consistent BCS controversy to have a change

No it wouldn't, it's not like March Madness doesn't have the same arguments, except instead of who's #2 or 3 it's who's #65 or so. The argument jsut gets shifted further down the rankings. For example, you have an 8-team playoff (probably the most reasonable). Strickly going by the AP rankings, that plpayoff has no Notre Dame, West Virginia, Arkansas, Boise St, Rutgers.

Truly, what would a playoff solve other than perhaps a more deserving champion, per se, but there will still be teams who have legitimate arguments for being included thus muddying the discussion.

Also, don't sleep on USC should they run the table. Their SOS will likely be better than Florida's and certainly better than Texas'.
